Daylight Robbery in Caboose Strikes Big Four Yards

Quinn Pindeil and Gus Williams lost money from their street clothes left in a locker aboard a caboose during yard switching in the Big Four yards. After the theft in daylight, officers searched the area but found no clues. Pindell lost 38 dollars and Williams 34 dollars. police continue the investigation.

True Bills From Grand Jury In Indiana Circuit Court

The prosecuting attorney on Saturday placed true bill cases on the entry docket. Alford Wins Big Damages in Goshen City Case

Orville R. Alford sued the city of Goshen for 20000 in damages after injuring his leg stepping into a posthole near F B Hoffmans grocery on east Washington street. The circuit court jury found 87500 in his favor after a two day trial and will appeal to the supreme court.

Popular Musician Receives Gold-Tipped Baton Gift

Henry Geiss director of the Trumpet Notes band was surprised at a band concert in the Hotel Bucklen Saturday when Eugene Foster announced a gift from the members. The group presented a gold tipped baton inscribed Presented to Henry Geiss by T. N. Band 1896. Geiss expressed thanks, valuing the gesture over the value of the baton.

Ladies Day Helps Build Elkhart St John’s Church

The St John’s parish church in Elkhart benefited greatly from Ladies Day donations with generous offerings from hotel proprietors and local patrons. Mr Wall contributed 25 as a personal check to the building fund, Mr John McNaughton gave 100, and Wall & Carry added 5 to the total. The artistic new church edifice drew increased community support and pride.

In Wakelee Cass county Michigan during an electrical storm a farm house was struck and a blank wall in an upper front room displayed a perfect image of the house as seen from the road. The image faded after nine days. Emery Arms is on the sick list.

Corpse Turns to Stone At Oak Ridge Cemetery

The Goshen Sunday Post reports that Christian Bartholomew was disinterred at Oak Ridge in Goshen for reburying after an 1893 Elkheart death. The body appeared perfectly preserved with flesh and bone turned to stone. Five men required to lift the casket as witnesses described a marble like face and unchanged features.

Tough Youngster Sentenced to Reform School

Harry Myers a twelve year old Benton township native is described as a natural thief and was sent to the reform school for boys by Judge Wilson after being taken into custody by Deputy Sheriff Chatten. He had been at the Orphans Home Mishawaka and was adopted in Kansas before returning to the county infirmary under sheriff and Supt McFilten.

INDIANAPOLIS June 24 The Indiana Democratic state convention opened with strong support for free silver. B F Shively of South Bend won the gubernatorial nomination on the first ballot, defeating George W Cooper. Claude Matthews nominated for president at Chicago and John B Stoll Preston Miles named national delegates. Presidential electors Henry Starnhart and Thomas B Hedges named. Delegates expected to finish work the day of the session.

Trumpet Notes Band Dazzles Elkhart Visitors at St Joseph Visit

The Trumpet Notes Band entertained about 500 Elkhart excursionists in St Joseph last Sunday with a 60 minute balcony concert at Lake View. The crowd of over a thousand on verandas and boulevard hailed the band as it drew cheers for pieces like William Tell and Agnes polka. Organizers anticipate a July 4 return performance, praising the band as par excellence and noting the Elkhart party’s refined status.

Drowned Seminary Student in St Josephs Lake

James Parnell a 20 year old seminary student from Notre Dame drowned accidentally while bathing with companions in St Josephs lake. He disappeared returning for a final dive and was found after a brief search. Coroner ruled accidental drowning. his parents reside in Ireland.
