Joseph Hall and J. H. Fickle plotted to sell a set of teachers' examination questions found in the office of State and local superintendents. Ellis, Elkhart County superintendent, denies wrongdoing but faces pressure after the mail copy of the questions arrived and a seal was found cracked.
A mob of about fifty organized to expel black residents in Decatur Indiana. A second, protective group formed to shield the negroes. A worker was forced from the Burt House and fled. another hid in a saloon stairway until located. Two of six workers remain and vow to stay and fight for their rights.
The trial of ex City Treasurer P. P. Abel for embezzlement began with a subdued session. Dodge & Dodge defend Abel while Hile and Deputy Harper lead the state case. Jury selection included Levi Heimbaugh Abe S Wilden A Smith Henry Butt Aaron Martin Benjamin Eby Garrett Swart Walter Brown Ira Elliott Amos C Heath Bruce Freeland Morgan Balter. Witnesses and council records from the old city government were presented, Abel’s brother A M Abel present, court rooms nearly empty.
A major fire in Saratoga destroys the Arcade Shackelford and Saratoga theater, killing Mrs Elizabeth Mabie and injuring several. Seven Arcade occupants were missing but later found. fire chief Shadwick is seriously injured. Property losses reach about 300000. Several local and company offices listed as losses. A separate note says Seymour churches plan ten days of tent services starting July 20.
Jurors acquitted Philetus P. Abel of embezzlement in Goshen after a trial that yielded no testimony for the defense and no spectators in court. The case hinged on whether a $6,000 repayment traced to Abel originated with him and whether earlier shortages tied to city expenditures could be construed as embezzlement.

Rathbone may refuse release. only acquittal suffices. Aqueduct burst threatens water famine for thousands. A Havana mob demanded bread at the palace as Palmar distributed funds for food.
Wilkesbarre June 10. Gloom settles as no settlement follows the Mitchell Wright conference. Evidence shows miners and operators remain far apart while barricades and homes for non union men are being built with vigor.
New York June 10 President Thorne of the North American Trust Company emphatically denied that the firm is promoting a gigantic plan to combine the national banks in every financial center and state capital.
In Wilkesbarre the fire department pauses as officials address a dispute. Officials warn of possible service disruptions while negotiations continue with firefighters over wages and working conditions.
President Mitchell and Secretary Hasley held a conference regarding flames that had been raging sixteen months. They stated the meeting bears no bearing on the ongoing situation and emphasized the need for the company to fill vacant positions to prevent immense losses.
Acting Governor says Trinite will be the island’s commercial hub replacing St Pierre which remains a ruin. Harbor upgrades and a railroad to Fort De France planned. Trinite population 6 743 lies northeast of St Pierre with many refugees working on streets.
Lightning struck oil well No. 1 on the Hunsicker lease six miles east of Berne Indiana destroying hundreds of barrels of oil. The well came in unexpectedly and after the driers stopped for the night a bolt ignited escaping oil and set nearby timber land afire causing hundreds of dollars in property damage.
Capt. Lewis Bayley naval attache of Great Britain in Washington has gone to England and will not return. He had been accused of surreptitiously viewing naval maneuvers at Narragansett Bay last summer and later conducting harbor surveys at Florida coast points.
Chicago authorities began the investigation into the St Luke asylum for inebriates fire that killed ten and injured more than fifty. They expect criminal prosecutions. All injured residents are reported as doing well this morning.
Elkhart Brass Company incorporates with capital stock of 12500. Grand jury to inspect charges of selling examination questions against County Superintendent Ellis. State Superintendent Jones leaves Indianapolis for Delphi to seek confession from Joseph Hall newly released from Marion jail. Jury includes Caffray Wilden Leatherman Arbogast Roose and Garver. Ellis has served as superintendent since the 1880s. term ends early June 1903.
Report from Indianapolis says a special Elkhart county grand jury session will be called. Joseph Hall confessed buying state exam questions from a county superintendent, naming a official but Jones did not disclose who. Ellis bondmen Yates and Vail remain tied to a $1,350 shortage after earlier $3,300 gap was reduced.

Clyde White an Elkhart barber once linked to counterfeiting was placed in the workhouse for 151 days for assaulting his mistress Cora Dygert. Judge Ferrall fined $20 and costs and ordered 120 days in jail with release set for October 31.
Albert J. Miller won 72 dollars from the city of Elkhart for wages at 20 cents an hour under the 20 cent rule. Judge Ferrall awarded 72 dollars and 25 dollars in fees, noting no further penalty due to it being the first case of its kind. city likely not appealing.
Articles of incorporation filed today name H. E. Bucklen W. H. Anderson Albert Hansen Louis Anderson and Fred H. Reed as incorporators. Capital stock set at 12500 dollars to manufacture brass castings and novelties. Plant to be built in the city’s northern area on a site yet to be chosen.
The First National Bank of Elkhart sues E R Kerstetter for possession of real estate and the case is before the county clerk this afternoon.
Benjamin Myers sued Indiana Railway Co for 5000 dollars over injuries at Tenth and Marion streets last winter. The St. Joseph circuit court granted the motion of the plaintiff to dismiss the case today but indicated it will be resubmitted.
In Kansas City on June 11 a group of physicians and others organized the Missouri Society for the Prevention of Consumption to curb the spread of tuberculosis.
Albany June 11 The court of appeals unanimously affirmed Johan Mosts conviction and sentence of one year in the New York penitentiary.
Louetta Nusbaum and Alvin J Nusbaum were granted a divorce. Mary Withers and George K Withers also received a divorce in today’s filing.

Homes and businesses lost roofs, plate glass shattered, telegraph lines toppled, and panic ensued with no fatalities reported locally. Reports from Merna and central Illinois noted injuries and deaths.
A historic storm battered Peoria for hours ending this morning. Seven people are confirmed dead and extensive damage is reported with downed wires across the area. Rescue and recovery efforts are underway as residents assess the wreckage.
