Judge Blake received a morning letter from his son Edgar describing arrival in San Francisco from the Philippines and weakness. Edgar had been aboard a hospital ship bound for Hong Kong and regimental orders require him to go to China.
Mrs Hatfield of Middlebury street suffered a dislocated knee and a broken bone in the left leg when she fell while riding a bicycle on Goshen avenue Sunday forenoon. She was taken home by carriage, a physician was summoned, and she will be confined to her home for several weeks.
James Embers a deaf mute 35 from Vincennes was struck by a Lake Shore freight train near Millersburg while attempting to board. His left leg was crushed and amputated six inches below the knee at the county poor farm in Dunlaps. He may have a hip fracture. condition serious but not fatal.
Harley Forrey, a mentally troubled man once jailed for safe keeping, was brought home yesterday to stay temporarily. His father and brother pursued him in a carriage the moment he was released, but he leapt from the vehicle and hurled stones at them before a Goshen officer redirected the episode and escorted him home.
Goshenite Will Brown formerly of Goshen employed by wood cutter Charles Thompson was arrested in Mishawaka on a turkey theft warrant from Jacob Miler. He was briefly held for a preliminary hearing but discharged for lack of evidence. Mrs. Hannah Brenneman, 49, died at her Jimtown home of heart failure. funeral set at Jimtown Baptist Church Tuesday at 1 30 PM. Also noted a Muncie grocer pedaling a bicycle coffee grinder to grind coffee for customers.
W F Kreighbaum, a dairyman, denies the claim that a cow was bitten by a rattlesnake or that any cows were sick. He supplied milk to the dinner hosts whose guests were made ill last Friday, suggesting the food was poisoned by baking powder. Milk from the same cow reached many other families without issue, and he claims no snakes exist near his Lady Land property.
Moses D. Hartman withdraws from plans to open a road house in Dunlaps after purchasing Goshen’s Pony saloon. Max Ratner, oozing confidence, pledges to avoid a Dunlaps road house, as locals defend the town’s honor and resist vice.

Lightning struck Guyer’s barn two and a half miles east of Mishawaka totaling about 3000 dollars in losses with 1500 dollars insured. Two horses were saved and the barn contained 800 bushels of wheat 400 bushels of oats 500 bushels of corn 30 tons of hay buggies wagons and farm implements. A second barn of Eli Whitticker two and a half miles east of Osceola also burned entirely.
Lloyd S. Smith died Sunday morning at 12944 Pratt Street at 8 30. He was 59 years old and died of dropsy. He leaves a wife and four children Nora May Charles and Leon. He was an engineer and Civil War veteran. Funeral at 3 PM Tuesday at Trinity M E Church with Rev Brown conducting services.
Jap Clem, Milford liveryman, was thrown from his buggy when his horses reared while driving south of Milford. He suffered severe injuries, with responders tending him at the scene.
Mrs. Collins Blake plans to travel to San Francisco to see her son Edgar Blake who has served in the Philippines and fell ill last March. He hopes to rejoin his company and go to China, with his time due to end next June and currently in hospital.
John Miller assisting in transferring furniture from South Bend to the city became overheated yesterday. He was taken to his East Jackson Street home and remained in serious condition for several hours. He is slightly improved today.

Mrs Edwin Honer of Napa was kicked in the face while hitching a horse. She was knocked unconscious, and on rescue doctors found a broken nose and several missing teeth.
A fight broke out on Goshen’s North Side last night drawing one officer and several surgeons. J C Darnell armed with a Winchester confronted approaching musicians led by Patrick Denning, a melee followed with Darnell striking Denning and a brick strike aimed at Darnell. Court plaster and armed devices are in Goshen today.
Grace Knowles of 907 Harrison street stepped on a rusty nail last evening. The nail penetrated deeply and was removed with difficulty. Careful dressing was applied and doctors fear possible blood poisoning.
L. M. Whitehead, check clerk of the Big Four at Goshen, kept a $40 gold watch in his vest that hung in an area a tramp could reach. He did not see any suspicious characters nearby.
Lake Shore will operate three special trains to Shipshewana for the August 19 republican judicial convention. Elkhart passengers can travel round trip for fifty cents and Goshen riders for thirty cents. Trains depart 8:30 and 9:00 a.m. from Elkhart and 9:40 a.m. from Goshen.
George L. Frank sues for divorce from Amanda Irank alleging abandonment. They wed September 17 1884 and separated July 4 1896. They have two children Roy Frank 14 and Bernice Frank 10. Roy with father, Bernice with mother. Orrin M. Conley represents.
William Brandon, struck by lightning last Friday in Ed Rockwell's barn west of the city, shows signs of improvement though in great pain. Dr. Short notes the barn’s healing and expects a rapid recovery. Mrs. Rockwell, who had a hemorrhage of the lungs during the storm, is also improved.
The Bellefontaine Bridge company won the Midway Street culvert and Turkey Creek bridge projects with bids of 7300 422 and 550 dollars, the lowest of seven bidders. One Midway culvert bid was 10000, per the South Bend Times.
A gang of Big Four telegraph line men arrived in Goshen yesterday morning to replace the existing wires. They will transfer the lines strung for ten years on Western Union poles between Goshen and Elk Heart to poles owned by the Big Four company.
Constable Amos Heath of Goshen captures Chauncey Jacobs on an old fine. While transported to jail Jacobs breaks free and escapes into unlikely pursuit. Authorities will not pursue if he does not return.

Officer Pearce was walking behind W. Hill's store when he stepped into a washed out hole from heavy rain. He suffered a painful bruise to his right leg below the knee and was severely shaken by the fall.

Clyde Rinehart sues Myrtle Rinehart for divorce alleging adultery. Married August 2 1896 and separated January 15 1899. Attorneys Deahl and Deahl represent the plaintiff.
Monday night two strangers loitered at Meader's livery barn. By yesterday afternoon several double harnesses were found missing parts, chiefly throat straps. The motive remains unclear and Mr. Meader is puzzled as investigators pursue the peculiar case.
The will of Adam S. Baker of South Bend, executed January 24, 1881 with a codicil August 13, 1897, was placed on file. It provides $500 to each child at marriage after Emma L. Keasey received $500, residues go to wife executrix, and Emma M. Swartz gets $5,000 for service in the family. The decedent was father of Mrs. C. C. Herr of Goshen, a local figure.
A Saturday visit by American tourists at Waterloo battlefield revealed a wine mill marked Flint & Walling Mfg. Co. Kendallville Ind USA at the center near the British lines. The group saluted Indiana with three cheers.
Jacob Milschdeler of Nappanee asked Clerk Dennett for a marriage license to wed Eliza Pletcher a 17 year old girl of that place. The parents did not consent and the license was refused. He said he had courted the girl for years but her father objected to the marriage. A blank was filled out and he left hoping to obtain the signature.
Report circulated that Will Brandon, a farmer west of the city, died from burns suffered during last Friday's storm. Attending Dr. Short said this morning Brandon was resting easy and out of danger.
Mrs Harrison Williams of Chester ton Porter county died suddenly Saturday night at age sixty three. A prominent resident she was a sister of Congressman Jerry Simpson of Kansas.
