Miss Mary Johnson at 622 Harrison Street finds a light in the kitchen Saturday night. She enters the locked house, confronts a prowler who escapes as a neighbor aids her, no items reported missing.
In a friendly rivalry between Elkhart and South Bend, Elkhart posts the highest receipts for the year ending Saturday night with 71,629.51 dollars while South Bend reports 271,368.94 dollars. The tally crowns Elkhart as the top carrier office in the nation for total receipts and net receipts among Indiana offices.
Several days ago word spread of the marriage of a book agent named C and Conner who lived in Elkwort with his bride before the ceremony at Goshen. While in Ghio, Conner left a large board bill and then borrowed 38 from his landlady promising repayment, a pledge not kept.

The June apportionment of the state school funds is set at $45 per capita, same as last year. Elkhart County receives $18,438.20 at $1.45 per capita, with $18,926.37 collected and ready for apportionment. Elkhart ranks ninth by children served and eleventh by total amount. county has 12,716 school age persons.
The supreme court affirms Marion county court ruling in the Indianapolis school bond dispute. It holds the school board a separate entity from the city, each allowed to contract debts up to two percent of the least taxable value, impacting all Indiana cities.
Marriage licenses were issued to Fred O. Strohm 31 and Corea B. Kahler 24 of Eikhart John B. Brubaker 22 and Emma E. Myere 23 of Wakarusa in a regional notices brief.

Jacob M. Coffman and Vista DeCamp married Sunday evening at the Lutheran church parsonage by Rev. Rice. The bride is daughter of Mrs. W. A. DeCamp and will live with her husband near the city. Coffman works at the post office. The ceremony surprised many friends.
May M. Wagner sues Lloyd Wagner for divorce alleging adultery and failure to support. Attorneys Deahl and Deshi. Married November 25 1897 they lived together until June 24 when she left. Alimony sought up to 1000. Defendant works for Metropolitan Insurance at Goshen and is well known here.
Michael B. Shes of Elkhart had his assessment raised from 405 to 4730 after representation by attorney Perry L. Turner before the board of review on Thursday. Jacob Goldberg was ordered to bring his books to show credit conditions and his case was continued.
Washington reports three cables from Manila: Gen Aquino surrendered unconditionally with sixty four rifles to Lieut OConnell with Macabebe scouts on June 29. Gen Ricarte captured July 1 between Paco and Stana. Lieut Draper of the Twenty second Infantry killed in Luzon and buried at San Isidro. Transport Warren sailed with a battalion for San Francisco as enlistment terms near completion.
On July 3 near Michigan street and Strong avenue William Leininger Jr. traveling for a Kansas City firm, was ordered to raise his hands by two young highwaymen. He dropped his umbrella and fled, eluding pursuit in darkness. Officers Rinehart and Dunbar found one man in J B Davidson's yard. the other escaped, and Davidson later found an attempted theft of hose from a tree limb. Leininger suspects novices.
Governor Lind learned from Consular Agent Frisbee in Rat Portage Ont that conditions among the Indians along Rainy river are improving. State officials report this as the only news, while U.S. Army HQ officials downplay reports of any uprising and see no danger of an outbreak.
In St Louis Missouri two North End strike sympathizers were shot by a local citizen. Julius Kulage aged 30 of 1430 Mallinckrodt street died from a chest wound. Alexander Stoffreger aged 18 of 8600 North Broadway was wounded in the hip and seriously hurt. The shooter identified as Theodore D Waters secretary of the Hafner Lothman Manufacturing company.
In Indianapolis case the Indiana Supreme Court ruled that civil cities and school cities are distinct corporations each allowed indebtedness up to 2 percent of assessed property value. The ruling validates millions in bonds and preserves bond validity under the constitutional 2 percent limit.
A deranged young woman aided by farmers near Le Claire Davenport Iowa is identified as Miss Marion Bybee of San Francisco. She walked twenty miles saying she slept under blackberry bushes and appeared shoeless with signs of exposure.
Five injured and ten more hurt when passenger trains collide at a dead end near Remington five miles west of Loveland Ohio. Mrs Agnes Evanfeldt of Cincinnati is seriously injured. property damage is slight.
Auditor Berkey reports receipts of 131.70. Rumor says H E Rosbrough may claim his license in April. Ira A Husschaw fined 316.35 for Canada thistles in Jackson township. Herman Rosbrough of Nappanee secured a liquor license in Goshen this morning via power of attorney amid a remonstrance. Nappanee residents threaten to prosecute him for every drink sold as a conflict flares.
Coroner Eiaenbeiss investigates the found dead body of 71 year old Mrs. Mary Kurtz in Harrison township five miles west of Goshen. Her husband says she complained of back pain yesterday and died in bed this morning. He woke, found her unresponsive, and alerted daughter and Mr. and Mrs. Overhouser. Coroner has no decision, citing likely old age.
Max Ratner, freed from jail after a brief liberty, fears a looming storm as the court proceeds to collect costs and fines from his conviction for selling cigarettes to underage boys. He had dismissed the appeal, and unless he pays, he will be jailed again. Chas. A. Sparklin reports a Milford dry goods store fire Friday evening. A plaster chunk fell, igniting nearby goods. the fire was contained with about $400 loss, fully insured, and the store awaits adjusters.

Ernest Keith and Anna Loring admitted guilt in Marshall Michigan on charges of forgery for swindling merchants in Elkhart and other places by passing worthless checks. They face prison terms upon sentencing.
Frank Hansen Beck aged 12 son of Mr and Mrs Hansen Beck of Riverside broke both bones in his right wrist when he fell from a cherry tree at home last evening. Dr. Thomas attended.

Miss Josephine Reynolds and Miss Louise Van Buren rode engine No 1 south bound train No 5 from Arkansas City to Oklahoma City at one mile per minute. The wager with Rough Rider Frantz funded the stunt as the party headed to the reunion. Reynolds bet candy she could pull the throttle as easily as engineer Jim Hayes.
The June government receipts are $51,435,832 with expenditures of $32,340,673 leaving a surplus of $17,895,159. For the twelve months, receipts total $568,988,948 and expenditures $487,759,171, producing a yearly surplus of $81,229,777.

Twenty three years ago yesterday afternoon a cyclone swept the district south and west of the city destroying buildings and crops. Joseph Bowen died from injuries. Jerry Bowen, in the house, survived as the structure collapsed. Elkhart suffered severe damage and residents remember the storm.
The 17-year-old son of Hiram Siaybaugh of near Indian Lake DeKalb county fell thirty feet in his father's barn. He landed on a spitenfork handle which pierced his bowels. Doctors Rudolph Corunna, W S Williams Kendallville and Barnett Fort Wayne operated Saturday but could not save him. He died yesterday morning.

Adam May of Mishawaka area aged 60 died by suicide Saturday forenoon at 11 using carbolic acid. He lived four miles northeast of Mishawaka and leaves four sons. He had been in poor health before his death.

Judge Thomas B. Long, prominent Indiana jurist, a 33rd degree Mason and past grand master, committed suicide at his Terre Haute home by a single gunshot after despondency. He studied law under Col. R. W. Thompson and was well known to the Indiana bar.
A telegram from H. P. Parker of Fabiana reported the death of William B. Curtis at Mount Washington New Hampshire. Curtis was a founder of the New York Athletic Club and a veteran sportsman. The notice notes his death occurred during mountaineering activity.
