Marion Merchant Claims First Unassisted Triple Play
John Darmody, a wealthy Marion trader and Notre Dame alum, asserts he made baseball history with the first unassisted triple play in spring 1873. He recalls fielding a hot liner at second, tagging to third, then sprinting to catch the runner between first and second for the final out. The feat, he says, was witnessed amid local excitement and contrasted with stories of Hines.
