Indianapolis dispatch reports Governor Hanly ordering militia to Muncie amid severe rioting after a streetcar strike. Two thousand mobbed cars, damaged windows, barns filled with strike breakers armed for defense as police struggle to disperse crowds.
Elkhart observes a general holiday with a festive New Year in the Elks lodge at the new temple. A banquet for 239 members features speeches by George Shaw and Exalted Ruler James A. Bell on dues and temple funds as the city enters 1908 amid hopeful business prospects and early-year inventories.
H Bullard of Niles Michigan agents of the Society of Corrections and Charities arrived with three children aged one two and three years. The Wright parents are in destitute circumstances. The children were placed in the Michigan state school at Coldwater.
A two year old son of Mr and Mrs Philip Woods sustained severe burns after playing with fire while the mother was in the barn sixteen miles southwest of Elkhart. The child was carried to a neighbor’s home where flames were smothered, but the burns are extensive and doctors report a doubtful recovery. The mother and father were injured while trying to remove burning clothing. Separately, a four year old girl from Ner panes suffered a deep six inch gash from a chair rail after a fall from a high chair.
Indications suggest Rev. William A. Sunday will hold a revival in Elkhart earlier than expected. Negotiations with Jim Ware began nearly a year ago and Sunday has asked Rev. W. He Brighmire, president of the Ministerial Association, for data on local conditions and the prospects for a united church support.
The Goshen liquor conflict centers on license removals and possible saloon closures. Anti saloon backers expect more fights as licenses for George B Dolson Frank Wickwire and Smith and Potts near expiration in spring and July. Citizens await reopening actions and turnout in ward three.
The Modern Woodmen of America will hold a public installation of officers chosen at a recent meeting in the Odd Fellows building hall. The event will be followed by a banquet and entertainment, with invitations sent to all members and their friends.
Several new revolvers have arrived at the police station for trial by members of the night force.
