Morning blaze at 1425 Franklin Street, home of Harvey B. Shelley, caused heavy damage estimated near 800. Firefighters battled flames, adding hose and extra pressure, while residents saved much furniture. Authorities suspect a defective flue as the cause. no serious injuries reported.
Four directors named W. Ellis Jedidiah Hughes Sam H. Gasife and Aaron Work face a civil action alleging breach of fiduciary duties in connection with corporate governance and decisions. The suit seeks remedies including damages and injunctive relief. The case is filed in the appropriate municipal court.
Defendants in two Saturday circuit court suits face $1200 judgments in each. Collings, Taylor & Co. of Cleveland and Minneapolis Kuitting Co. of Minnesota sue, represented by Dodge & Hubbell. One suit claims a fraudulent 1892 financial statement of Eagle Knitting Co. was published in January 1893. The other alleges failure to publish a required January 1893 stock capital and assessment report.

A runaway team hitched to the Chicago Fair delivery wagon near Goshen frightened by a dynamite blast used to blast frozen ground. The wagon was wrecked as the team bolted, while workers added an addition to the Fair store building in the rear.
From LaGrange where Judge Wilson returned and adjourned court until Tuesday. The Shipshewana bank robbery suspect was released on prosecution motion. He refused to compel the main witness, a soldier in Manila, fearing uncertainty in his return and potential unreliability of his testimony.

Levi Hain living east of the city is gradually failing with no hopes for recovery after a surgical operation. Mrs. Alf Moyer of Dunlaps underwent a painful home operation performed by Drs. Turner and Thomas. Walter Warren, a Lake Shore firefighter, slipped from the pay car at Toledo and broke a leg.
A farm hand named Trum Browning employed by Edward Logan in Jefferson township had his left hand pierced by a pitchfork yesterday. The wound was gainful but not necessarily serious. William Bradley of Florence Michigan, father of the late George Bradley, died this morning. his death is linked to the late George Bradley's passing. John Vanderveer of Goshen paid a $11.55 fine after pleading guilty to public intoxication following a drunken incident in which he tried to clean out the east end of town.
Information from today indicates the street railway company will begin work on a Mishawaka South Bend to Elkhart line around April 1. Two routes were surveyed, north and south of the river, with the south side likely chosen and an independent bridge upriver linking to the north side line to complete a circuit for Mishawaka and South Bend.
A morning fire at Frank Coppes residence in Nappanee caused about 2000 dollars in damage. Smoke issued from the garret at 10 30 and investigators found fire along a mud clogged second floor wall area. Fire was extinguished after extensive efforts leaving the second story ruined and contents damaged by fire and water.
Dr G W Spohn became owner of a five rods square lot at the northeast corner of Second and Franklin streets in a deal brokered by J W Fieldhouse for former owners Mr and Mrs Albert Leach of Chicago. Purchase price was 6000 dollars. He plans four store buildings with a second floor flat and a main entrance on Franklin Street.
Foster Bacon of Adamsville left his horse and buggy on High street near Borneman and Doll’s hardware. The horse vanished by dusk leading police to suspect theft with a possible recovery in Goshen where a matching horse was found Saturday. Bacon was to be notified and recover the animal today.
A LaPorte relative of Louia Rosenthal cites a Klondike voyage with George Kray and Fred Date. The Oct 20 letter, mailed from Amys Rapids, Alaska, dated Oct 20 1898, details storms, a broken boat with lost bacon and beans, early mining gossip, and a buggy gold rush scramble, plus patent notices and December railroad accident stats.
