James A. Peterson a Lake Shore engineer was killed while oiling icy red boxes from the running board of engine 137 during freight No. 72 near Millers station. Fireman Ben Moore witnessed the fall as the train moved about twenty mph. The body was brought to Chesterton then Elkhart for the 54 year old, a former city marshal and Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers member, with his funeral under their auspices.
