In Goshen at the county courthouse an annual delinquent tax sale was held after noon. Treas urer Weaver and Auditor Foster oversaw bidding as Elkhart property drew spirited competition. Many advertised lots sold for fractions of their size due to tax debts, with several auctions extracting strips from larger parcels.
Judge Vanfleet may hold a conference with ex Treasurer Holdeman or his attorney this week to resolve a $3 900 short balance in the county school board accounts. Holdeman may claim the board was paid. the board says it never received the sum. If Holdeman proves non liability the board would seek the present treasurer for repayment. Public reaction targets the school board’s handling of funds and financing practices amid county transactions.
Ex County Clerk Harry S. Chester of Elkhart completed the ritual for a new fraternal insurance order to be named the Modern Samaritans. Articles of incorporation will be filed next week by incorporators H. Chester, C. G. Conn, J. L. Brodrick, P. L. Tarner, S. B. Short, Herrick Stephens, and Dr. Tarner.
Prosecutor G Sims with attorneys C W Miller and A Deahl, appointed by the court, travel from Goshen to Lagrange to settle disbarment specifications for Jonas O Hoover before Special Judge F D Merritt. A truck of low books will accompany them, with trial date set after issues close, though J D Ferrell predicts a quick fifteen minute argument. Many witnesses remain to be summoned before trial can begin.
A pleasant ceremony was held at 6:30 PM Saturday at Mrs. Elizabeth Hall’s home on Ade line avenue. Benjamin Welfinger and Florence Hall were married by Rev. A. S. Fisher in the presence of many friends. The groom works as a photographer in Goshen and the bride is employed at the Jones gum factory. They will reside in Goshen.

The central fire department distributed one cent valentines yesterday. An unusually heavy mail prompted Inspector Darling to hammer a wall and file envelopes for public inspection. No fireman was left out. Chief Sanford and Spot Little earned two or three valentines each.
A wheelman rode from South Bend to the city starting at 5:30 this morning and arriving about 8 o'clock. The trip, made on four wagers, was to Helckhart through snow, after which the rider returned by rail.
Leander J. Jeffries of Leesburg sues American Mutual Life Insurance Co and S B E Barney of Elitert alleging misrepresentation by an agent led to payments for an insured without consent. He seeks 300 damages and refunds. Blake Johnson & Wilson represent Jeffries.

Elmer Warner was arrested Saturday evening on incest charges and given a noon yesterday hearing, bound over to circuit court under a 500 dollar bond. With no bondsmen appearing he will likely be taken to Goshen today.
George Weston manager of the construction department of the Elkhart Goshen and Southern Railway called on prominent citizens in the city yesterday. He spoke about the new road construction and said operation would begin before the summer month. He noted that the lid required the most time to complete.
The board of state charities has supervised dependent and neglected children since 1897 and placed seventy five in homes with about twenty transfers. Two were adopted and four more await adoption. The program claims annual savings of seven thousand five hundred dollars to taxpayers. A daughter testifies against her father in a case of alleged incest before Judge Arnold. the man, Himer Warner, disputes the charge. The hearing was held privately. the family recently resided in the city, possibly from Goshen.
Albert Stillman recently purchased two new wheels and yesterday enjoyed his first ride. He struck a rat on Riverside, badly demolishing the bicycle but escaping injury.
H F Kidder sheriff transfers a tract in Elk Hart to John W Fieldhouse valued at 51468.27. Rose Steeple transfers a lot in Elkhart to Sarah Steeple with other consideration.
City Treasurer Abel yesterday disposed of the delinquent taxes of 1896 and fifty two descriptions were sold.
A rowdy brawl broke out in a South Main bar last evening around 8.00. Two drunk men sparked the melee as beer glasses flew through the room and about six patrons fought. Police arrived after the fracas ended, and no one was arrested or injured.
The wedding of Mr. T. J. Munson and Mrs. Allie Sparklin was held Saturday at 8 pm in the bride’s parents’ home 110 Pacific Street. The ceremony room featured cut flowers and potted plants with lax carnations and roses. Miss Alice Munson was bridesmaid and Bert Sparklin the best man. Rev. FPF EB Knopf officiated. The couple will reside at 110 Pacific Street.

Dr Lyman Congdon from Chicago attends Miss Vira Congdon who is very ill with typhoid fever in Bristol Bristow area. Obituary notes Delia Congdon aged seventy nine widow of Potter Congdon. Dinners and visits mentioned include Berths Santschi guest of Dr Aiken, William Kantz visit from Sandusky, and Frank Anderson of Elkhart. Several locals listed with sickness, housing, and social events such as the Rathbone banquet.
Union Mich February notes report Mr Keeley and wife of Mason hosted by Mr and Mrs Willard Fuller. Elma Wise of Elkhart visiting Union relatives. William Armstrong reported ill. Several families visited Peter Hilbish and family last week. Watts is busy repairing his house at Elkhart and expects to occupy it soon. Conrad Kantz suffered a severe muscular rheumatism attack last week. Mrs. Jacob Rine is seriously afflicted with paralysis. Maggie Fetter visited Miss Jennie Bickel Sunday. Eugene Meiser and Philip Kramer started for near Vandalia Monday.
