A early morning blaze destroyed the Hawks Hardware Co. complex at 112-118 Lincoln Ave in Goshen, with 57,000 in losses and 32,000 insured. Fire originated in the furnace room, spread to paints and powders, gutted the building, and led to water flooding the Collins & Himebaugh saloon. Six water streams fought the four hour blaze.

Elkhart will have no pest house this winter after a short council session. A special committee of Kindy Graham and Beck reported no action needed at present. The Bower street sewer benefits were to be assessed January 2, and December wages paid to police to fund Christmas. The light committee proposed relocating the City Hall street lamp 200 feet east toward Franklin and East streets, midway between two bridges.

Silas W Ball died of apoplexy at 9 30 last night at 205 Garfield Avenue. The 51 year old is survived by his parents Mr and Mrs Albert Ball of Canton Ohio and five children Mrs Perry B Miller Herman Ralph Truman and John Ball all residents of Elkhart. Funeral arrangements have not been announced. Ball had been seen in town earlier in the evening in apparently good health before suffering head pains after supper. A physician was summoned but he died about an hour later.
