Missouri Valley reports the National Bank of Commerce in Kansas City closed by order of the Controller of Currency. Officials blame constant cash drains and excessive currency payouts that exceeded legal reserves. Depositors expected to be paid in full.
The court adjourned without resolving John Gerster’s bid to block a Third ward remonstrance tied to ward boundary disputes. Gerster’s affidavit claims 65 of 200 signatures are invalid as nonresidents or misrepresented, with 38 voters listed on a withdrawal. The case continues with filings and next actions pending.
Delegates arrive in Washington to present bids to the national committee. Chicago and Kansas City lead as likely hosts with St. Louis Denver Pittsburgh Atlantic City also submitting bids. A June date is expected for the convention to be chosen.
In Jersey City a tunnel blaze involving eleven workmen trapped by smoke from burning tar and paper left one dead, two dying, and three others critically ill. Rescue attempts followed as fire crews battled the blaze today.
Washington December 5 Burton retiring chairman of the river and harbors committee predicted an appropriation of 50 million dollars for ten years for improvement of the waterways. Miss Grace Stevens left for Kansas City to spend the winter.
Recruits reported for basic training as the Navy chapter prepares new sailors for missions. Drill instructors oversee standard arrivals, uniform checks, and initial safety briefings at the base.
A forthcoming meeting will discuss the canal project focusing on planning and funding. Officials from the planning office and city council are expected to attend to review proposals and timelines for design, construction, and oversight.
City officials report for the month ending November 30 shows total receipts 3,439.32 and on hand 39,012.19 with total on hand and received 124,591.7. General fund payments totaled 15,121.21 with 12,608.18 in unpaid warrants and library and improvement deficits listed. A brief finance meeting was held with most council members present except Hazelton and Lounsberry.
Burglars stole jewelry valued at 316 from Robert S Chamberlin at 506 Bower Street while a nearby fire damaged Newton F Shaffer’s home at 709 Prospect Street. Police detained two suspects briefly. a woman may be involved. The blaze started in a woodshed and caused extensive damage without insurance.
M F Fleming a top Lake Shore railroad engineer known as Little Flem, and Mrs Clara Hooper of 504 Marion Street were wed by Rev William Lash at his Cedar Street home last evening. They planned a brief visit to Fleming's sister Mrs Grant in Marshall Michigan.
