Six boys were arrested on Monday for stealing melons from a city grocery. Police report they allegedly concealed the fruit in sacks, prompting store staff to notify authorities. Investigations continue as charges await formal filing.
A boy named Robert Johnson of 1602 Pearl Street was arrested before eleven for alleged involvement in stealing three melons from the store of Kavanagh and Pollard. A second boy Earl Johnson fled. a third, Donaldson, was later named but escaped. George Welty witnessed the theft and notified Pollard who pursued and caught Robert near Marion and Main.
Henry Wilson the horse trader charged with stealing a horse from George Winters of Bower Street was arraigned before Judge Blake. Perry Turner acted as attorney and after waiving examination Wilson was bound over to the circuit court in 8500 bail. He remained in jail but may post bail soon.

A young man posing as a patent medicine agent hired a Bowles livery rig for three days with a companion. Suspicion rose after the pair vanished toward Bremen. The constable recovered the rig later, finding the vendor missing and the horse tied at the Bremen post office.
George W. Butler reports a last night burglary at his Riverside home. An open face Elgin pocket watch, a pocketbook with papers, and a pair of pants were stolen after a window entry while the family slept. The couple suspects they were drugged and found the trousers discarded near an outhouse.

D. J. Whitehead, two miles west of New Paris, reported losing a 1400 pound roan mare valued at $150. He turned her out Saturday. yesterday morning he found her with a broken right hind leg above the knee. The horse was shot.
Warden Hert reports to Governor Mount that Jacob Caiger is incorrigible. Caiger will be moved from Jeffersonville to Michigan City after serving part of his sentence for stealing sheep.
Henry Wilson the alleged horse thief bound over to the circuit court in 500 dollars remains jailed and may stay several days while he seeks bond. His three horses and carriage were sold with his consent to raise funds for his defense.
Real estate transfer records show Peederick J. Zetler selling seven acres in Elkhart to Catharine Actier. The transaction lists seven acres as the property detail with no further terms disclosed in the fragment.

Mrs. William F. Smith of 302 Sycamore Street was riding a bicycle on South Main when a moving van caused her to fall after striking a street car truck. She broke both bones in her right leg midway between the knee and ankle, was treated by Drs Short and Lockwoed without anesthetic, and will be taken home this evening after being carried to Ira Albright’s nearby residence. Her husband was notified by telegram this afternoon.
Mrs J B Clairmount and her sister arrived from South Bend at four yesterday afternoon to enlist Supt Braden in locating their two 17 year old sons. A note home said they planned to go to Goshen then Toledo. The boys left Elkhart and are currently unaccounted for. They are earning decent wages in a legitimate business. The women returned home last night.
Ertley family ten miles from Wakarusa include Will Ertley and two children with diphtheria. The wife and mother died a week earlier. Other local families saw cases but strict quarantine kept the outbreak contained. Intense heat worsened the sufferers during the crisis.

One hundred forty three relatives gathered yesterday at Millersburg for a family reunion. Representatives came from Middleville Greenfield La Grange and Fairfield County Ohio. A permanent group formed with Dr J A Work Elkhart president Dr I W Short Elkhart vice president Frank Larimer Millersburg secretary and Mrs Etta Work Bargor South Bend treasurer. The group planned a meeting on the island in this city next year.
Steve Culp farmer on Neidig farm three miles southwest of Goshen reports two calves dying in a day with gasping strangling symptoms. He found no obvious cause and suspects poisoning though a third calf remained healthy. He filed no formal diagnosis.
N Paulson of Indiana avenue fell about six feet while working on the Lake Shore elevator at Constantine. He struck his right side on a plank, suffered pain, did not seek a doctor until returning to the city, and was found to have two fractured ribs.
A morning collision near Pierson, 29 miles north of Grand Rapids, between the Northland express and passenger No 2 killed over thirty with many wounded. Engines and cars demolished as fog hindered signals. Names of the dead include W H Fish Gustavus Grootveldt M Leets Levan Edward Woodhouse Louis Boyle C Piers on Mark Bloss om and Timothy Grootveld.
