Friday a boy about fifteen stole from the Maurer hardware store safe at 805 South Main, taking two five dollar bills and coins after ratsing the safe by turning the knob. He fled via the back alley and was seen leaving the area. police pursue leads and expect arrests soon to reveal the planned theft.
City Treasurer P. P. Abel, with his family at Klinger Lake, burned his left hand severely when a gasoline stove exploded after a leak spilled fuel into the home. He discarded the flaming appliance outside the cottage to prevent total loss. He received dressings in White Pigeon and expects no serious damage though the burns are very painful.
The jury in the William Meor Morgan assault case against Wilbur Bender failed to reach a verdict and was discharged on Saturday. The case was reset for Wednesday August 5. The initial jury ballot favored acquittal three to six, then later ten to two, with weak evidence that Morgan threw the firecracker that injured Herder.

Peter Garter a 24 year old resident north of Bristol drowned in the St Joe river Saturday evening while swimming with four brothers after threshing. His struggle drew in his brothers and nearby fishermen Harry Dairy and Will Klickner helped recover the body after a swift current and diving effort. Funeral was held Sunday at the family home.
Trustee Sweitzer filed a petition for three new bridges including a Hilhart river crossing from Elkhart to Sugar Grove with a 16 foot driveway at an estimated 7500 dollars. A dustman bridge replacement near Dunlaps at about 1000 dollars is proposed. A Pine creek stone arch on Elkhart to Bristol road at about 1500 dollars is also requested. A man named William Scanlan was decapitated in a morning incident near Whiting when struck by passing vehicles. Authorities investigated the scene and identified the hazard as an accident involving multiple cars on the road.
William Scanlan of Whiting was found near the Lake Shore tracks near Elkhart this morning. The head was severed from his body and investigators believe he took his own life while intoxicated, placing his neck on the rail as a train approached.
Automatic couplers and air brakes threaten mass layoffs on railroads adopting safety devices. A boiler explosion at the Noah and Christian Pletcher saw mill eight miles west of Goshen Friday at noon scalded Charles Christ near an employee of the mill. The old boiler carried excessive steam under 110 pounds pressure, said to be worn out and unable to handle the workload.

P. P. Abel and his wife returned from Klinger lake last evening as Abel’s left hand fingers were burned while he dragged a burning gasoline stove from their cottage. The fire caused deep burns but he saved the building with quick action and is recovering.
County Clerk Louis Dennett Supt J D Braden and Dr Turner examined Frank Lester this morning and reported he is of sound mind at the present time. An effort had been made to prove that Mr Lester was insane.
The two year old daughter of Jerry Essig, living about a mile and a half north of Goshen, fell from a chair Saturday evening, striking the base board and fracturing her collar bone.

Telegram from Denver reports Judge Blake will reach Elkhart with his son Edgar who has recovered post hospital care in San Francisco after service in the Philippines. Edgar is said to have gained strength and the family plans to return home unless delays occur.
A bolt holding a tongue to the Arbogast dairy wagon broke at noon as it crossed Main Street Franklin. The frightened horses ran until the wagon lurched, but Mr. Arbogast and the team stopped in front of Truth office without damage.
The two judges John H. Baker and Francis E. Baker have decided to forgo a Michigan fishing trip this year and will travel to Wisconsin. The decision is greeted with relief and satisfaction, and the adventure with a Michigan game warden will be remembered by many.
A seven year old boy, son of Elmer Am benour, two miles east of New Paris, lost the first three fingers of his left hand while playing with a feed cutter on a farm owned by Ben Butler. Dr Walter s of New Paris attended and dressed the wound.
George Landon of two miles north of the city fell from a bicycle two weeks ago and injured his shoulder. He treated it with liniments but the pain persisted, and yesterday he consulted a doctor who confirmed a dislocation and performed a reduction.

Charles W Enders transfers land to Claude Lee anc wife in York for 500 dollars. Sarah A Wolf sells a lot in Elkhart to David F Miller for 300 dollars. J R Mather and others transfer a lot in Elkhart to David S Moyer for 800 dollars.
