Washington reports say congressional leaders oppose Roosevelt’s push for new legislation and view his messages as an attempt to force his nom ination. Republicans accuse him of stirring discontent to save his own bid, fearing the party’s defeat if he succeeds.
London reports a Japanese training cruiser Matsushima exploded by a projectile off the Pesci dores islands. About 159 drowned and 141 saved. The loss includes Admiral Ito's flag ship and the sons of Field Marshal Oyama and Baron Chinda among the missing.
Late yesterday an order halted work in the variety department until Monday May. Collinwood shops reportedly received similar orders. No reason given. Superintendent Berry said some men were recalled for emergency work but Friday and Saturday vacation would be observed. Repairs will increase with traffic resumption. Over 100 locomotives sit in yards, many in need of repair or awaiting disposition as scrap. Supplies must be replenished soon to handle large orders.
George C. Hitt was named receiver for the Indianapolis Star Muncie Star and Terre Haute Star after claims by Daniel G Reid that $249000 loaned financed current bills and that the papers lack working capital. The bond was set at $100000 with Reid seeking an accounting and sale of the assets to satisfy creditors.
Frost is forecast for northern Indiana tonight risking damage to fruit and early garden crops. Reports from Ohio central reveal heavy wet snow, wind, and sleet causing widespread fruit damage while Kentucky and Madison Indiana report several inches of snow.
Between 3 15 and 5 80 p m thieves entered the Sterling flats rooms of Mr and Mrs J B Cochran while Mrs Cochran was away. Two pairs of shoes and a gold ruby bracelet were taken before police were notified and say the department is investigating the case.

Franks life hangs in the balance after a collision on a highway near South Bend. Doctor Daugherty reports paralysis below the injury and serious doubt he will regain use of his limbs. He is at Epworth hospital, stabilized after an operation to remove a fractured cervical vertebra.
Dr. C. M. Eisenbeiss and Dr. Frank S. Garlktomw are bedfast with severe bruises and two broken ribs for Dr. Carlton. Dr. Wisenbeiss has severe bruises and cannot move without help. Frank G. Stahr escaped uninjured and John W. Fieldhouse suffered only slight bruises.
Dr Daugherty says the outcome is extremely doubtful due to spinal cord injury. The operation relieved cord pressure but paralysis below the injury may persist, with possible gradual recovery if the cord damage is not too severe.
Mr Frank suffered severe spinal injuries in a late night collision near Elkhart. He remains conscious with stubborn resolve, aided by supporters and medical help at Ridencus. Notables including real estate dealer John W Fieldhouse and postmaster Dr C M Husenheiss are named among those connected to the accident.
An Elkhart party returning to South Bend reports a 3 PM mishap two miles west of the city. Four accompanying cars left the Conn party to bid farewell then headed home.
