In New York's Tenement District a drunken husband leaped from a fifth floor window after his wife left with their two year old son. He believed she would not return and his act was witnessed by the wife who later blamed herself for the tragedy. The husband died on the walk below while the wife stood nearby in shock.
Mrs Mary McLaughlin aged twenty five was shot in cold blood by her drunken saloonkeeper husband after an all night vigil. The couple’s three year old baby shielded its mother as she begged him to spare the child. McLaughlin killed her with a shot through the heart.
Henry Shaffer died last night at his son's residence six miles east of the city from complications of diseases. Funeral services will be Friday at 1 PM at Newton Shaffer’s home, with Rev. Simpson officiating. Interment at Zion cemetery. He leaves one son Newton Shaffer a letter carrier and one brother Aaron Shaffer of Wisconsin. wife predeceased him. Born August 22, 1833, he was 75.
Springfield April 23 Opposition to Bryan endorsement collapsed after the state democratic convention met at noon. National Committeeman Roger Sullivan remained in control with a caucus of district delegates. Sullivan could not sway the Simon Pure Bryan faction in Cook County which held a rump convention downtown.
Police linked break-ins at the Mennonite church and the American Time Lock and Recording plant to juveniles after two basement windows were forced and the kindergarten equipment at the Sunday school was taken. Both sites were entered around the same time, with officers placing a watch on both locations.
Four Italian workers were killed by a gas explosion at the Ellsworth Coal Company mine in Pittsburg. About a hundred other miners were in the mine at the time and escaped unharmed.
Springfield April 28 The supreme court sustained the constitutionality of the local option law a move that adds to recent blows against saloons. The ruling reinforces local option measures amid ongoing elections and a tough period for saloons in Illinois.
More than 300 members attended a reception at Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church in honor of Rev Beeks and Mrs Beeks. The official board and Ladies Aid planned the event with readings, solos, and a choir performance, followed by refreshments as both clergy and parishioners expressed mutual appreciation.
Members of Indiana Hive No 22 Ladies of the Maccabees protest after an alleged janitor action at the I O O F building last night. Reported authorities from the union were involved and a disturbance occurred during the event at the hall.

A spirited game of captain ball was played and a close score was reported though the winning team could not be ascertained. The gymnasium work is drawing to a close and the girls fear they will miss the enjoyable features of the organization.
A county minister over fifty with twenty years in the church faces scandalous charges filed by congregation members. Damaging evidence is said to exist and a church trial is expected soon. The case involves alleged misconduct with a seventeen to sixteen year old.
Report claims many fish caught in St. Joseph river near Elkheart and sold on streets are unfit for food. Waterways near the city polluted by sewer discharge and algae cover, with fish alleged from Canyon Naughton farm. Local sportsmen collect evidence for possible arrests.
A grass and leaf fire near Christiana Lake endangered several Elkhart cottages including the Miles and Compton properties. Fire started from a discarded fisherman’s match, fought for about two hours by Shick hotel workers and locals who saturated dry leaves and used lake water to halt spread. The blaze, driven by a brisk breeze, was contained with only minor damage reported.
A. G. Manning of South Bend spoke at the First Presbyterian Church to the Men’s League on The Goal of Civilization. He read from manuscript, praised as a thoughtful, forceful address, with discussion and refreshments following.
