Inan Francisco area reports show limited housing with people sleeping in parks as available residences dwindle. Local officials note ongoing shelter needs and efforts to expand temporary housing options.
Telegram from Oakland at 10 30 reports fire raging in San Francisco with no water along the bay shore. Buildings dynamited to check the blaze. powder supply nearly exhausted. most of the business district and half the homes destroyed. Golden Gate Park refugees face being swept into the sea.
San Francisco reports property losses near 300 million dollars and at least 5 000 deaths with officials suggesting the total could rise to 10 000. Oakland wires report continued operation as the city endures pandemonium and chaos in the quake aftermath.
Elkhart residents filed numerous telegrams with Western Union and Postal Telegraph seeking word from relatives and friends in stricken San Francisco. Wires were hampered by the disaster, though service was improving. several locals with kin in Frisco reported no news yet.
Mrs. Frank McKinley, 34, died at Rest Cottage 318 Prairie Street after a year of consumption. Survived by husband Yank McKinley, four children aged five to nine months, taken to an orphanage in Mexico. Burial at Beulah Church with Rev. A. B. Yoder officiating.

Council referred case to the city attorney. court action unlikely.
Ten cent vaudeville venue projected for the south end of Main Street moves forward as F S Thomine for H G Sommers closes a lease with Strafford Maxon for the vacant lot at Main and Pratt corners. Sommers plans a 60 foot tent to host a 10 cent show with a stage and bill details pending.
The council unanimously approved a 560,000 bond ordinance with 12 votes to 2 amid seismic disturbances in the chamber. Mayor Greene thanked the body, while Hazelton and Gotwalt led opposing sides on municipal ownership and bond funding. Controller Bell will advertise sale of the bonds at about 3.14 percent interest, with bids expected from many buyers.
The corner stone of the Elkhart Congregational church at Third and Marion was laid with a copper sealed box placed in the stone. Oscar Antz led the box deployment and Rev. Dr. E. D. Curtis praised plans for what may be the city’s finest edifice with a projected cost of 40000 dollars. The ceremony drew a large crowd and featured a Beckwith address from Chicago University.
Plans for a new Congregational church describe a Tudor Gothic edifice in northern Indiana. The structure measures about 104 feet by 65, with two towers on Marion Street and a small octagonal tower at Third Street. Bedford stone walls will support a slate roof and an arched main entrance on Arm Street.
