Thaw Jury Deliberations Continue Amid Note Exchanges

In New York on April 11 the Thaw trial jury asked to hear alienist testimony again and to read portions of Thaw's or Delmas speeches. Justice Fitzgerald read certain alienist passages and jurors sought exhibits including Madison Square Garden plans and letters. Thaw sent notes to reporters about preparing for a possible verdict as jurors remained solemn and focused on determining the degree of murder.

New York Central Trims Twentieth Century Limited Cars

After extensive talks with passenger and operating officials the New York Central announces a policy change cutting the Twentieth Century Limited to five cars to improve Chicago to New York running time. Previously six or seven cars were hauled to meet demand, but the heavier trains caused delays and lateness at the eastern terminal.

Elkhart Citizens Meet Over Sidway Mercantile Factory Plan

Citizens gather in the city court room to hear a special committee report on keeping the Sidway Mercantile Company's factory in Elkhart. The committee, after meeting with C A Sidway, shifts from a preferred stock sale to a bond issue to raise 100000 dollars for increasing capacity. committee members and Safeguard Accountant Company of Chicago say the firm has a bright future and urge local investment participation.

Dairymen Closed Firms Consolidate Under Stronger Buyers

Twelve Elkhart dairy farms have gone out of business in recent months as the industry centralizes among stronger firms. The cause cited is the lack of profit from milk priced at six cents a quart. Harvey Wambaugh has taken over Long's dairy at 116 Marion street and merged it with his Indiana avenue operation and plans a $10,000 sanitary milk plant.

Mystic Shrine Nobles Tour to Indianapolis

Big Corset Firm Weighs Elkhart Location

An established corset manufacturer has proposed a new Elkhart plant and has told H B Sykes it could employ about 500 people locally. The firm notes ready labor in the Illinois city but asks officials to consider Elkhart before deciding.

Little Joseph Parish Killed By Train Near Elhart

Ten year old Joseph LeRoy Parish gathering coal along railroad tracks eight miles west of Elhart was struck and killed by a Lake Shore work train at 5 p.m. The boy’s neck was broken and his skull fractured. Engineer Harry Reynolds of Ellhart said the boy walked alongside the track and stepped onto the tires as the train approached. The coroner's inquest was held today at S. J. Finch's undertaking rooms with the train crew present. Burial will be in Goshen where the family once resided.

Lake Shore to Build Large Locomotive Shops South of Gravity Yards

Lake Shore announces plans to construct large locomotive shops near the gravity yards, potentially the biggest on the New York Central system. The project will serve main and branch lines between Toledo and Chicago, including lines controlled by the Vanderbilts. Details on cost and capacity remain undisclosed.

Murdocks Deny Purchase Of Wawasee Line

Michigan City Dispatch reports the Murdock McGowan syndicate bought the Wawasee Lake electric line last week in New York but Charles Murdock arrives denying any purchase or consideration of such a proposition. The road remains in receivership with the line as its sole asset.

Mother of Mrs Layton Dies of Apoplexy

Mrs Sophia Klopfenstiers died of apoplexy at 69 in Harris township St Joseph County. Wife of Philip Klopfenstiers, she leaves three daughters Sophia Schielke Abigail Myers and another daughter. Funeral services Sunday at 2 pm at Salem Church, Elkhart with Rev Prage officiating.

Night Fire Ends Fishing Trip Tenting Party

Four Elkhart sportsmen returning from a fishing trip were asleep in a tent on Hen Island dam when a camp fire spark started the blaze. The canvas and their clothing were burned but all escaped without injury. A party member’s confession led to the discovery of the incident.
