Records theft and recovery in St Joseph County Michigan
The Goshen correspondence reports the 1872 theft of St Joseph County public records, the capture of Dick Lane in Chicago, bail set at 36000, and subsequent efforts by Goodrich & Fartelotte to recover the volumes. The county sues the Chicago firm for damages as records were damaged, with deputy officers implicated, an arrest in Chicago tied to the case, and ongoing inquiries into all guilty parties. The item shifts to local business, population notes, and town life including Coneville, White Pigeon, Pigeon, and Elkhart County notes, plus a council petition for a new town district.
