Wax Models Led to Dreadnought Design Decisions

The British Admiralty built many wax models and tested them in a naval tank at Haslar near Portsmouth before choosing the final Dreadnought design. More than fifty wax prototypes were created and tested to verify claims of performance, with each new battleship type undergoing similar miniature evaluations before construction. The Washington navy yard recently updated its practice, and modern designs continue to involve costly testing to validate new ideas before full-scale construction.
