Commodore Charles Woods of the Elizabeth yacht Chihs is rescued after a six hour fog voyage from Robbins Reef light. He sailed to Brooklyn with Edwin Marsh in the Hazel W. launch but the return trip through dense fog nearly cost them as the boat narrowly avoided several collisions. Woods navigated by shore approach, rejoining Staten Island, and reached safe harbor.
The city fire commissioners plan a formal inspection and public demonstration of an auto engine between January 20 and 25. They will test several engines, require six to twelve months on trial, and compare costs to current engines. Chief Gerstung and other officials traveled to New York for the automobile show while three applicants sought department positions.
