Thomas Golding an engineer on a Pennsylvania Railroad fast freight between Philadelphia and Jersey City was killed at Rahway by a blown cylinder head while at work. His body went to Stiner's morgue in Philadelphia where his family was notified. He was about 30 and a resident of Philadelphia.
Three hours of flames at the Central Railroad coal chutes in Elizabethport shops. Firefighters fought up a 100 foot ladder amid wind and smoke, battling spontaneous coal combustion and possible pipe cooling issues before the blaze was controlled. Bishop Edward C. Andrews of the Methodist Episcopal Church, famed for delivering the McKinley funeral sermon, died at 82 after a weeklong illness. He began ministry in 1848 in New York and served as bishop since 1872, retiring in 1904 but remaining active in the church. He chaired the Twentieth Century Thankoffering, raising $20 million for Methodists nationwide.

Social hour precedes the service and attendees are invited to bring a New Year greeting or resolution on paper. Grace P E Church is absent from Graystone program beginning at 9 15 with song service and a social time at 10 15.
Brigadier General Dennis F. Collins received a dispatch from Trenton announcing Major Frederick Gilkyson Adjutant General of his staff has been named Assistant Adjutant General of New Jersey. The message is signed by Adjutant General R Heber Brientnatt.
Count Leo Tolstoy was thrown from his horse at his country estate and sustained a dislocated shoulder. Despite his age the patient is said to be doing well.
The winter term of the Elizabeth Commerce College begins in 1908 with enrollment open on or before the date. It offers shorthand, bookkeeping, and English with night classes on Mondays and Fridays on the third floor at Hersh Building, 207-209 Broad Street. Telephone 348-J. Principal E. McMickle announces the largest attendance since the school’s founding.
A bomb exploded at a Bronx residence on East One Hundred Forty-ninth Street injuring ten, with motive claimed as revenge. Police seek Antonio Botticano, son-in-law of a resident, to learn more. Front wall and ceilings collapsed, injuring Mrs. Joseph Re and her daughter Marie Bottisano, among others.
Hartford, Conn. Dec. 31 A telegraphed report says Rev. Jere Knode Cooke former rector of Hempstead Long Island fled with his ward Floretta Whaley and remains at large. Rienzi A. Clarke father of Mrs Cooke in Hartford predicts eventual arrest and divorce proceedings as San Francisco authorities search for Cooke and his wife.
The proprietors of men’s furnishings clothing and shoe stores on Broad Street agree to close their shops at 8 o’clock each evening during January February and part of March except Saturdays. The agreement takes effect Thursday evening.
The New York morning market extended gains for Union Pacific Reading and St Paul pushing prices to highs in months. Early trading showed some profit taking but most leaders held modest advances as government bonds steadied and the list dipped after the first hour.
City Council backs petition to adopt the Strong act of 1902 creating a seven member county board elected at large. Five percent of voters must sign, with ballots to decide adoption or rejection at the next election.
Turkeys at 23 cents per pound and chickens at 16 cents are offered for New Year's Day by F G Heints at the Quality Market 102 Orchard Street one door from Cherry Street. Other meats available at this market.
New York police commissioner directs ban on ticklers at New Year celebrations in Coney Island and citywide. Inspectors will be responsible for keeping order as officers flood streets to deter rowdy behavior. Confetti throwing not restricted, but ticklers will trigger arrest. Detectives will monitor for pickpockets during festivities.
The second torpedo flotilla led by Lt Hutch S Cone reports arrival at Para Brazil five days late after heavy seas. Midshipman F H Roberts of New Haven Conn fractured his leg after being thrown to the deck post Trinidad. The flotilla left Hampton Roads December 2 and trails the battleship fleet toward Magdalene Bay then San Francisco.
Boston December 31 Taft arrived assured of a united Massachusetts delegation at the Republican National convention amid talk of Crane breaking with Lodge and backing Hughes. The mood shifted as reports from Washington emerged and Taft faced disappointment over a Merchants’ Association speech. Taft then traveled to Millbury to visit his dead mother’s home, tears at the Torrey Mansion, and a solitary entrance on arrival.
