The St Elizabeth Hospital expansion in New Jersey nears occupancy by mid January. Plans include a remodeled old building, anew kitchen, operating rooms and living quarters under Sisters of Charity supervision, aiming to elevate the facility to a modern model hospital for private and ward patients.
Joseph Samuelwitsch of Newark was committed to county jail for thirty days after assaulting Mrs. Bessie Golden of 435 South Park Street who had accused him. She alleges he recently stole several hundred dollars' worth of silver from her Newark flat and followed them to the city. A more serious larceny case may be pursued by Mrs. Golden, with her husband supporting the claim.
A five year old boy carrying a mail addressed to Mrs Clow was struck and killed by a Third Avenue car near Second Street in Brooklyn as Christmas events were underway. The child did not open the envelope for the coroner, and a man named Macher was arrested on charges related to the incident. A Christmas tree and holly sale adjoins the accident report with notices of local merchants and events.
City merchants plan an January 1 start for early closing of large stores. Stores would close each evening except Monday and Saturday, reducing lighting costs and giving clerks more personal time. A clerk patrol will monitor compliance and names will be published as merchants agree.
