Government furloughs for sick soldiers lack homeward support leaving them stranded at rail stations. In Chicago last week volunteers from Iowa, sick and emaciated, passed through the city and faced hunger. Arrangements are now being made to care for any sick and hungry soldiers passing through.
In New York the Empire building elevator was dropped twenty stories to test a new air cushion safety. A marble slab in the car survived a 300 foot fall without breaking eggs, though water spilled from a glass.
Admiral Dewey will travel from San Francisco to Washington by rail to confer a favor upon several million people who are eager to see a wide crimson band across the continent.
A weekly roundup notes Secretary Alger pleased with the investigation committee. The George Washington Memorial association held its first meeting to found a national university in Washington under a new charter. Dec Payne of Cleveland beat Tom Conroy of Troy in a twenty round bout at the Manhattan Athletic club in Troy North Carolina. Dowdell offers a 10000 dollar purse for Lavigne vs Erne at Coney Island to be held September 23. In Vienna, George A Banker won the professional mile in the cycling world championship, with Verengen second and Jacquelin third. Casper Leon and Steve Fiannagan set for a twenty five round bout at Lenox Athletic club Friday September 30. George Byers beat Frank Reynolds in twenty rounds at Lenox in New York. A spate of fires reports extensive damage. Reis Printing in Omaha suffered a $65,000 loss, fully insured. Grand View hotel at Highland Lake burned, a $40,000 loss. Jerome Arizona saw destruction of its business district with about $1,000,000 in losses and numerous fires. George S. Alan gon voyage cited, while William N. Wood, publisher of the Washington Iowa Democrat, was killed attempting to board a train. Fire damaged Stroudsburg carpet building in New York and a wood rim factory in Behrland area. Home blazes displaced families. revenue cutter Bear arrived at Beattle with around 100 aboard.
Robbers gagged and tied a clerk at a Wilkesbarre real estate office and took 460 dollars from the safe. A cascade of brief reports follows including murders in Otsego and Alaska, arrests for robberies in Chicago and Liberty Missouri, and a lynching aftermath. Day two includes a naval parade on the Delaware a land and naval forces parade a dedication at Fairmount Park and a banquet with President McKinley.
Inquiries at the British foreign office show no news from Kashorn and no reply from Gen Sir Herbert Kitc hespar since he left Omdurman. A British commander’s news is expected and it is likely the Egyptian flag now flies over Fashoda.
Test Suverior Wis Sept 23 Two thousand visitors took the city by storm last night arriving on five special trains over the Fosston branch of the Great Northern road linking the wheat country of the Dakotas to the head of the lakes. Great preparations for entertaining them met by two bands and almost the entire population. They proceeded to the Fair building for a feast and will be given an excursion and a ride around the city with a banquet at local hotels.
Minnesota officials and business leaders urge President McKinley to include Minneapolis and St. Paul in his western itinerary. Invitations from Representatives Stevens and Fletcher, Gov Merriam, the Minneapolis Board of Trade, and others were presented, signaling strong local backing for the visit.
A traction engine boiler powered by R. J. Walker exploded near Maza in Ramsey County. The incident instantly killed Walker's fireman whose name and Rolla home are not known. Two of Walker's sons were severely injured. Several horses died and several small frame buildings were demolished.
In Duluth Minnesota the charter election resulted in defeat by 1,214 for and 1,398 against, a majority of 165. Over 400 registered voters did not cast ballots and only about one-fifth of the city’s total vote was recorded. The interest in the election was slight.
Hazelton Sept 23. Saint Patrick's church at Audenced is sinking into the mines. Over ten hours of ground settlement have caused the southern wing to nearly collapse while the main structure rests on two damaged pillars. Abandonment likely.
A fire in Mount Horch twenty miles west of Madison destroyed part of the village and threatened the entire settlement. The Madison department was asked for help. once an engine was ready, officials reported the fire under control.
Serious Runaway in Baldwin Wisconsin as a farmer Charles Loregon drives with wife and son. Horses frightened by a traction engine. wife and boy thrown from wagon. Both reported seriously injured.
On September 23 in Fairfax Minnesota four miles southeast of the town a farm threshing outfit owned by W H Greer burned when a spark from the engine set the separator ablaze. Four stacks of grain were consumed in the blaze, with total loss estimated at 800 dollars.
John Fapacek aged ninety five died after a fall while feeding hogs in Montgomery Minnesota. He struck his head on a nail, the skull pierced about two inches, death followed. His wife had died three years earlier at ninety two.

Escaped on technicalities, August Sehmidka, jailed a year ago for rape, was discharged for the fourth time. He fled to the woods and others are preparing fresh papers, hoping to recapture him.
Paris Sept 23 The Echo de Paris reports M Cambon the French ambassador at Washington is to be transferred to Vienna to take up a new post. The announcement follows routine diplomatic reshuffles and is part of ongoing European alliance realignments.
Martin P Dock, a 35 year old unmarried man from Norway, cut his throat and died in La Crosse Wisconsin on September 23. Authorities note the suicide as the cause of death.
Barry of London defeated George Towns of Australia in the final heat for the English sculling title. Time was 28 minutes 28 seconds. Towns led for a mile but quit the race on the second mile.
The exposition building in Tacoma Wash widely described as the largest of its kind in the Northwest was completely destroyed by fire. In Madrid Liberal officials say the peace commission will have latitude to arrange terms. Can Gillis reportedly showing interest in the affair as newspapers note.
West Superior Sept 22 8 J. Gaberg a well known druggist was found dead on the door of a big store. Physicians attribute the death to a heart failure.
Bandatone Suffere From Fire, Sandstone, Minn. Sept. 23. The most disastrous fire which has ever visited this prince since Sept. 1, 1894 swept away half a block of business houses on Main street. The losses will Becreeate 215.000.
Washington Sept 28 The president weighs mustering out a number of generals and staff officers from the volunteer army as resignations rise. Promotions for gallant service in Santiago are expected soon, likely honorary and followed byMustering out. Regular officers promoted into volunteers may be mustered out to return to regiments.
Manila dispatch reports Aguinaldo forces likely to seize all southern Philippine islands unless checked by American forces. The Abbey carries arms for rebels and will head to southern garrisons. Reports of Cebu unrest prompt measures by British and possible actions by Dewey. Poisoning rumors about Aguinaldo deny any foundation.
Mgr Martinelli in Washington reports that bishops of New Segovia and several Philippine priests were captured by insurgents and brutalized. Cardinal Rampolla asks War Dept to seek relief and protection. Secretary Melklejahy instructs Gen Otis to inform and protect captives within Manila command.
Washington dispatch reports Capt Goodrich at Guantanamo says Commodore Watson has left for New York and Goodrich will command the naval slips. The Spanish cruiser Maurin Teresa, wrecked off Guantanamo, is expected to be raised soon though heavy weather may endanger the Colon. Also noted is Jefferson Davis escorting his daughter’s remains to the station, and Governor Morgan of Connecticut narrowly winning the state Democratic nomination for governor.
