Freshman Initiation at Elgin High Sparks Pep Rally
The Elgin High School campus buzzed as 29 green freshmen endured classic senior hazing featuring costumes from brides and grooms to Indians princes and a floor-mopping serenade. The day closed with senior-freshman gifts, a bowing ceremony, and a town park weiner roast after a spirited snake dance through Elgin. A Friday pep rally, drum line and Hawkeye beat, capped by the school song, fired up the squad for opening game. The Home Ec Club held its first meeting with officers listed, while freshmen and sophomores prepared sewing projects and pennant plans.

New Lights Improve Classroom Illumination At School
Aiming to reduce glare two grade rooms, Miss Groth's and Mrs Kobler's, received fluorescent lighting raising desk illumination to 30 foot candles. Students report less eye fatigue after two weeks of the upgrade and teachers note brighter, clearer boards. Separately, Dr John Sloan demonstrated liquid air wonders on Sept 18, freezing grapes and bananas, frying an egg via boiling artificial ice, delighting physics students. The piece also lists chorus members and introduces English teacher Bernard J O'Brien, a Geneva Ia native and former actor and war veteran, now considering his future in teaching.
