Social Welfare Old Age Pensions Budget Dilemma
The social welfare board faces a budgeting puzzle for old age pensions. Before and during the war pensions peaked around 58,000 with $25 monthly checks. wartime employment reduced rolls to about 50,000 while payments rose to just under $30. The board questions if pensioner numbers will rise after the war and, if so, by how much, and how much to request for the two years ending June 30, 1947, to keep the $30 average.
