Elgin's Rise From Otter Creek Mouth to Canned Goods Hub
In a Fayette County fiftieth anniversary address delivered before the Bayetta County Plonear Association on the Fair Grounds West Union Sept 4 1901 P F Bur gis recalls Elgin at the mouth of Otter Creek on the Turkey as the Mouth of Otter and Shin Bond Valley. A grist mill built by Diamond and Connor in 1851 powered corn and wheat and the town was platted naming followed two years later. Elgin has long carried a large trade and in recent years boomed with manufacturing and shipments of canned goods and other products while the 1900 population stood at 686. The town’s history blends local lore with early industry and growth.
