Roosevelt joined a long horseback ride and spent a quiet evening at the White House.
Washington September 26 The Texan battleship's action in the July 3 1838 dash against the Spanish fleet under Admiral Cervera is the focus of yesterday's Schley naval court inquiry. Three witnesses were aboard the Texas during the fight including navigator George C Hainer and chief engineer Alex B Bates.
Duluth reports Navy wheelman W B Adams and companions en route to Washington to testify in the Schley Inquiry. Adams says the Brooklyn loop stemmed from an error in following the executive officer’s helm order causing the ship to turn out to sea instead of bearing down on Vizcaya.

The blaze consumed E O Berg hotel town hall Sandwich bakery GB C Baxers saloon H L Haydens new building under construction millinery Miss Annie Tweten Farnham Jacobs Independent Press Walverson Skaro Dargue & SBro J M Jones Quail Swann and others. The fire engine failed to operate leaving residents powerless to save the properties.
An elderly woman, Mia Matdn Foust, 68, was found dead near Strawberry Creek beyond Palma after three days missing. Her head bore bruising and wrists showed struggle marks. authorities suspect assault and murder by railroad hoboes. Police investigation follows in Deadwood.
Fire destroyed the Thomas N. Rowe farm buildings in New Richmond Wisconsin. Tenant John Norton lost several hundred bushels of grain and some livestock. Snow vank Starr lost a threshing outfit and a team of horses. The fire started from a threshing engine. No insurance.

Gov. Harrie receives $200 donated by an eastern man who earlier claimed school land in the state. The governor plans to use the funds to create a library nucleus for the new Aberdeen normal school. Also reported, the Wavertree farm in Murray and Cottonwood counties sold for $200,000 to a syndicate including John Metcalf & Co and others. the herd of Galloway cattle at the ranch is the largest in the U.S.
Acting County Judge Doherty ruled the recent Peddler law unconstitutional for harming out of state residents by allowing samples to be shown before purchase. He also found it invalid for non-resident shippers. The decision effectively nullifies the law for non-residents.
Spenefieh Matehery reports the government fish hatchery has released thousands of fish in Black Hills streams and in Northern Nebraska and Eastern Wyoming. About a million fish eggs will be collected this month for winter raising and spring planting. Approximately 500000 young fish are currently at the hatchery.
Large attendance of clergy and laity in Faribault Minnesota for the funeral of Rt Rev Henry Benjamin Whipple bishop of the Episcopal Church. Eight bishops from Missouri South Dakota Duluth Fond du Lac Kansas Ohio Iowa and Minnesota attended along with Archbishop Ireland’s representative. The service followed Episcopal ritual with a simple office chanted and requiem sung. The body was placed in the cathedral crypt beneath the altar.
At the Bishop Whipple funeral in Faribault Minnesota two Episcopal clergy from St Paul were robbed on the platform. Rev C C Rollit of Red Wing lost 300 dollars including 90 cash and four certified checks. Rev Charien Mr Plummer of Lake City lost 16 dollars. Isaac Lincoln of St Paul lost 5 dollars. A third pocketbook was taken from a Christchurch St Paul lay member. Police are investigating.
Rev G N Moller deacon of the La Crosse diocese says he favors renaming the Episcopal church to American Catholic Church of the United States. He argues Catholic means God's own church and notes the change may be formalized at the San Francisco convention.
Grantaburg Wisconsin September 22 No reports from the sheriffs posse. A party near the murder scene believes Murgaw is hiding at or near the Indian village at the mouth of the Yellow River. Chippewa Indians are unlikely to harbor him and may turn him over to authorities. The terrain is wild and tamaorack swamps are hard to access for pursuers.
In Duluth Minnesota Sept 22 the Eastern Minnesota railroad faced costly pink holes on the Mesaba Range Division. A train dropped into one near Stonybrook causing fire loss and property damage. A second hole appeared about fifteen miles north with swamp track collapsing under an ore train. Recovery was swift but ore shipments are delayed.
Private Charles Lynch of Company M drank heavily and opened fire at his comrades. Caldwell was shot in the thigh and Amich in the stomach. A guard wounded Lynch in the leg and he was overpowered. Amich died that night. Lynch had been on leave and obtained liquor.
Frederick W. Hoyer of Henderson, an aged German, was arrested at the Minnesota Capitol after making veiled threats against Governor Van Sant. He carried a cane and carpetbag and demanded audience before being detained by guards. He was charged with vagrancy and remanded for further examination as doctors planned a mental check before Thursday’s court session.
In Monothone Wisconsin on a Sunday night Joseph Ditloff, a German, wounded his wife with a sackknife in a jealous assault, inflicting three deep abdominal incisions. The pregnant woman, mother of several children, is hospitalised with hopes of recovery. Ditloff was captured near town after fleeing, and authorities fear retaliation.
The entire Standard plant in Anaconda Montana was destroyed by a late afternoon fire caused by a gasoline tank explosion in the composing room. A faulty machine connection let gasoline leak and ignite from a pot flame, spreading to the large tank and enveloping the building in flames. Estimated loss stands at 150000 dollars. the paper, owned largely by the Marcus Daly estate, expects to rebuild and resume publication at once.
William Kernan a rich Chicago resident visiting Kenosha for a funeral with a young female friend disappeared after hiring a carriage. He was reportedly seen at 4 am with three unidentified men, carrying a large sum of money. Friends fear foul play and authorities search for answers.
Four members of Mrs. M. Filbert’s family were badly burned when a gasoline stove exploded during breakfast at Renville Minnesota on September 25. A child turned off the lights and then the stove, oil and flames ignited clothes, leaving Mrs. Filbert and a child severely burned while others suffered serious injuries. Fire was extinguished before major house damage.
Grand Rapids Wisconsin September 26 One of the largest land deals in the city took place Saturday as the Butler Sherwood Company of Chicago sold all its land in Saratoga town Wood county to John M Secrist and Co of Milwaukee. The 7400 acre tract will be opened for colonization to develop the county’s southern area.
Farmington Minnesota September 25 The Dakota County Agricultural Society board decided no fair would be held this year at Farmington due to adverse circumstances and postponed the event until the fall of 1902.
