Admiral Cervera to arrange transport. steamers to be chartered in New York per Capt. Eulate.
A Brooklyn Eagle dispatch from Montauk Point reports the transports Allegheny and Panther arriving from Santhigo with Ninth Massachusetts units. On board were 230 soldiers, 145 sick, and fourteen died at sea, all buried at sea, the highest death toll among incoming ships. The Panther carries ten members of Compute s 1 and M of the Ninth Massachusetts, with fifteen ill aboard.
Charles H. Soote president of Chicago Steel Works visiting the coast says the main obstacle to extensive steel manufacture in California is the scarcity of coke suitable for smelting. He notes rich manganese ore and good iron ore in the state and adds Washington could possibly manufacture steel to rival the Eastern product.
McKinley cotton, widely traded on boards of trade, was auctioned in Kansas City for 350 dollars to benefit the United States hospital fund.
