A Waukon man used 1536 empty beer cans to fence his front yard while vacationers note cans line park roadsides as they travel. A Decorah fish hatchery theft targets 204 large trouts, possibly breaking limits. Various quips and anecdotes close with a mix of humor and maxims about charity, vanity, and doing good.
Over 80 guests attended the September 5 ceremony in Aplington with Rev. Ph. Lauer officiating. Flower girls included Helen Muchlethaler Louise Baumgartner Marian Lehman and Louise Hackmann. Verna Yunker the Cook school teacher will stay at the Guernsey Smith home. Ella Friederich underwent appendicitis surgery after hospital observation in Decorah. Mrs. A J Koevenig resigned her bank job in Waukegan IL and will set up housekeeping in Postville with Mr. Koevenig. Gordon Mosby Walter Kohler and Harold Greenley, three embryo bank presidents, traveled to Cedar Rapids for Frontier Park auto races.
Mrs. Pierce Cashman and Spahr and A. Cashman came from Elma to begin teaching duties. Lizzie H. Lyons Marian Van Horan of Fayette Irene Nenno of Rowley and E. C. Roque of St. Paul arrived late week to take up teaching posts. Louise Meyer was to start in Cheery Valley after a postponed week due to a recent operation. Meyer is in her second year at the school, reflecting satisfactory work. A. M. Weibel drove to Cedar Rapids to meet his family returning from Brookfield Missouri.
Charles Kohler born July 7 1876 on a farm near Elgin son of pioneer settlers. He moved to Flandreau South Dakota at 15 and later Remsen where he ran a jewelry store until his death on August 28 at age 74. He married Anna Snyder in 1906. daughter Virginia lives in Long Beach California. Surviving are his widow four brothers three sisters and several relatives. He organized and directed a town band contributing to Remsen’s progress. Funeral held in Remsen.
Mrs Alvina Frieden returned home from a two week visit in Charles City to her family. Several residents left for Des Moines to enroll in a beauty culture course. The Langsdales of San Bernardino visited the Brabham home and were remembered to Elgin friends. Families of Blockhus toured the Black Hills and Yellowstone with stops in Hudson and West Bend. Supper guests at the Barker home included nearby families and out of town visitors. Jess Moody toured Chicago with Gale and Lezlee Joseph joining on return trip.
Numerous families and individuals from Parkersburg Elgin West Union Monona Dubuque and Calmar visited relatives across Postville Nashua Oelwein and surrounding areas over Labor Day weekend. Guests included the Andersons Longmiller Seilmans Whitford Shaffer Hackmann Schori and Desmonds with trips to the Little Brown Church and Knife Lake.
The Wayne Gilson family of Clermont Mf and Mrs Charles Wenger and others visited the Gene Echori home Sunday to mark Charles Wenger’s birthday. The H Dyack family spent Sunday at Charlie Yack’s Sumner home for a Yack relatives reunion.
