Transatlantic Radio Telephone Milestone Chronicle
Northwestern Bell manager notes the first trans Atlantic radio telephone transmission occurred October 21 1915 from Arlington Virginia to Paris with fragments heard at the Eiffel Tower. By 1927 overseas calls to Great Britain and Cuba were regular and in that era 11750 calls were made. Modern methods rely on submarine cables orbiting satellites and radio.

Conservation Plans for Three Farms Approved in Township District
The Fayette Area Soil Conservation District approved conservation plans for three farms at the quarterly meeting. Carl Lueder, district chairman, notes plans were developed with assistance from USDA Soil Conservation Service technicians. New cooperators include Glenn Burington in Westfield Township and Wes Ashby in Joy Township. Silka and Leslie appear among new collaborators.

The Rev and Mrs Landis Gross of St Olaf visited Mrs Ida Leuchtenmacher and Lewis on Thursday afternoon. Ralph Hanson family of West Union and Mr and Mrs Mervin Anderson accompanied by Merlin Anderson family joined for Sunday afternoon and supper at Elkader. Baltimore and West Union residents spent Sunday with the Schori and Schaer families including Eva Schori Gqdorpia Mac Louise Schaer and others. Hospital and home visits followed by plans to travel to Pleasant Hill California for a daughter’s illness. A neighborhood birthday club celebrated Mrs Alten Habeger with multiple callers and dinners.

Social Security Medicare Enrollment Deadline Remains March 31 1956
Earl T. Johnson social security district manager says most elderly beneficiaries in Northeastern Town have received their rights and the supplementary medical insurance enrollment materials. About 50 other elders not on benefits have contacted Waterloo district office, with eight in ten aged people to be reached by mass mailing. A third of non-reached recipients are hearing from us directly, another third still work full time and must file social security applications, and around one million more must contact their local office. The enrollment period for those 65 or older before year end closes March 31, 1956.
