Farmers push higher soil building payments for 1937 program
Fayette county farmers favor boosting soil building allowances and trimming soil conserving payments under the 1937 Agricultural Conservation Program. W. S. Rothlisberger reports ten discussion meetings show a large majority supporting reforms to expand soil building practices while maintaining program features. Proposals include eradicating noxious weeds, paying for phosphorus application, reestablishing baselines by land productivity, treating soybeans as a soil-depleting crop unless used as green manure, and basing liming payments on a per-acre basis. Recommendations will be shared with the State Committee in Des Moines and Iowa State College representatives.
