The Elgin Echo published in Elgin Iowa under HERMEN and BARTUNEK as a weekly paper. It entered second class mail Sept 1 1891 at the Elgin Fayette County Iowa post office under the March 3 1882 act.
Advertising rates listed include ten cents per line with a three line minimum per week. Cash with order lowers minimum to 30 cents. otherwise 50 cents. Blind ads and inquiries are 50 cents weekly. Card of Thanks and In Memoriam cards are one dollar. obituary poetry and similar notices at regular ad rates. Additional lines cost six cents each beyond ten lines.
Betty Lou Bennett daughter of Mr and Mrs Cleve Bennett married James Cook son of Mrs Lynn Gage at the Chapel of Memories Cedar Rapids in a candlelight double ring ceremony Rev Donald D Caspers officiated The couple and families celebrated with a reception at Cock a Doddle Doo restaurant indicating military service and plans to join in Colorado Springs later by the bride and groom respectively.
Mrs Gary Jacobson and Karol Loftsgard hosted a miscellaneous shower for bride elect Gloria Hyde at Mrs Jacobson's home Sunday. Readings by Nancy Orth and Sharon Loftsgard, games, lunch, and hostess service followed. Guests included Gloria Hyde and other attendees.

The Illyria Farm Bureau Homemakers met at Mrs. Myrton Strong's home on Sept 30 at 1 30 with 17 guests. Roll call followed Allegiance, a motion to assist with a new sink in the kitchen was made, and reports were given by Mrs. Jim Probert and Mrs. Edward Krueger. Mrs. Myrton Strong was elected chairman for next year, with Mrs. Will Christian as vice chairman and Mrs. Ed Gern as publicity chairman. The next meeting is Oct 18 at Mrs. Edward Gern's home.

Neal announced that children buying their first stamps of the school year will receive a free certificate signed by the seven Mercury Astronauts called Junior Astronauts available at the Post Office and at school during stamp day.
The Tertia Club met at Mrs. Leo Lehman’s home with Mrs Donald Sutter assisting. Fifteen members shared goals for what to make, welcomed Judy Long and Jann McMillan, heard Jal’s reading What a Teacher Is, donated to UNICEF, paid dues, and learned knitting slippers from Ella Dummermuth. The gathering ended with a club collect and lunch, with a future guest night at the Lutheran church.

The Fabricate Club met October 2 at Mrs Robert Chapman’s home with co host Mrs Dale Seitz. Members discussed craft projects for pajama or swimming bags and elected Mrs Robert Medberry and Mrs Earl Seitz to a six month planning committee. The November meeting will be at Mrs Dale Seitz’s home with Mrs Chapman as co host. roll call will be casserole recipes and crafts will focus on Christmas decorations.

Busy Beavers 4-H Club from Clayton County represented by Bonita Kjosa and Betty Sanderson at the Dairy Cattle Congress. They earned a red rating while Thursday, Oct. 3, the girls demonstrated "It Wouldn't Work" clearing and oiling four components with help from parents and leaders Mrs. Almer Amundson and Mrs. Marvin Reierson.
Elgin local news notes Bill Gerst of Quincy Ill visiting friends in Paul Butikofer home for several days. Sunday dinner guests at Ole Reiersons included Clarence Reijerson and Greg Walker and the Levi Molok ken family from Clermont. Glen Reierson and Lyle Meisner with Brenda hosted Harold Meisner’s Center Point guests. Mrs Wm Dennler and Danny visited Mrs Russell Friederich Friday afternoon.
A string of overnight visits and weekend gatherings highlights social life in the area. Households from Waterloo to Decorah hosted friends and relatives including the Medbery, Smith Brockton, Broadwater, Muehlethaler, Sumner, Moore, Kohler, Hanson, Coffin, Opstad, Nutting, Paulson, Kittle, Gilbertson, Pfister, Loftsgard, and Jenson families. Casual visits and Sunday dinners punctuated a busy pattern of neighborly hospitality.
Dens 1 2 and 3 enjoyed a Tuesday afternoon outing at Schori's falls with a wiener roast. Den Mathers and several den mothers plus Den Father Wm. Moore stood in for Rev. Lee Roy Collins.
