Max Eugene Gernand born in Volga December 14 1630. Baptized February 22 1931 by Pastor Sandrock. Confirmed at St John Arlington April 22 1944. Attended Volga Public Schools, class of 1948. Studied at Iowa State Ames dairy plant operation, 2 years. Moved to Alaska 1950 to work for Alaska Railroad as lineman. Army service begins August 1951, 11 months in Japan. Discharged August 1964, enrolled at Iowa State College September. Summers in Alaska as line construction foreman. Earned B S in Electrical Engineering June 15 1967. Married Barbara Jean Burrack at St John Lutheran Church the same day.
Valley Tigers dropped their second straight conference game at Waukon as Carlyle Blockhus scored the lone Valley TD. A scoreless first half gave way to a tight second half with heavy rain and defensive stands. Valley received the opening kickoff but failed to move the ball early.
In a tense gridiron clash, Waukon defends well and rides a late surge to beat Valley 7 to 6. Final scores show Fayette 6 North & West Central 24, Central & Waukon 7 Valier 6, with Valier scoring late but unable to seal the win.
Next Friday features Valley at Postville and North at Seomer. Wen Central travels to Wan dom while Farette hosts Eikader for a set of regional games.
The Veterans of World War I and the Ladies Auxiliary will hold their next meeting at the Chamber of Commerce building in Oelwein on October 11 at 8 00 p m. All members and non members are urged to attend and remember the date.
