Minerva Weibel visited West Union friends from Friday through Sunday. Judson Conner has been ill at his home in west Elgin for the past week. Vivian Weibel of Marquette spent the weekend with her uncle A. M. Weibel. Mrs. E. L. Morris of Marquette visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Falk, Joe VY. Schneider’s new home southeast of Elgin nears completion and will soon be occupied. C. P. Stoehr and Gladys Helms visited Harold Stoehr in Cedar Rapids and attended the Iowa-Wisconsin football game in Iowa City.

Swine Feed Mixtures Prove Superior to Tankage Alone
Iowa farmers learned at Iowa State College Ames on November 15 that combining tankage with linseed oilmeal alfalfa meal or similar feeds improves pig gains and lowers cost per pound versus tankage alone. The simple Trinity mix with 50 lb 60 percent protein tankage 25 lb linseed oilmeal 25 lb alfalfa meal performed best, especially for pigs on rape pasture. Cross bred pigs averaged 199 lb at six months vs 167 lb for purebreds, indicating faster gains with cross breeding when using proper purebred boars and sows. Oats fed whole proved most economical. dehulled oats were costly with poorer gains. Results vary by sow, but overall mixtures outperform tankage alone, with tankage remaining an important component.

Farmyard Toll Sparks Highway 56 Detour News
Motorists driving to Decorah along highway 55 last week faced a blocked detour near the paving end south of Decorah. To reach Winneshiek county’s capital, drivers were forced through a neighbor’s farmyard and ford the river after being charged 50 cents for entry. If the return trip also costs 50 cents, a round trip totals $1.00. The Ossian Bee labels the toll a hold up and urges the state to provide a proper through road if highway 56 is opened.
