The Elgin Echo Dial is published every Thursday by Strauch and Herman. It is entered as second class mail matter on September 1, 1891 at the Elgin post office, Fayette County, Iowa, under the act of March 3, 1652.
Subscription rates listed at 2.00 per year for four Northeast Iowa counties and 2.50 per year for outside above territory. Advertising rates show 10 cents per line for Want Ads with a 30 cent weekly minimum if cash accompanies order. Blind ads and inquiries incur 50 cents per week minimum. Cards, Thanks, and In Memoriam noted at 1.00 to 1.00, obituary poetry and resolutions charged at regular rates. notice text limited to ten lines.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 10, from the Presbyterian church in Wadena for Martin E. Davis with Rev. Charles Carlston officiating. Casket-bearers were Guy Probert, Lester Wenger, Carl Miller, Reuben Hackmann, Otto Krueger and George Durscher. Music was provided by Mr. and Mrs. Harry Johnson with Mrs. Leallen Knox accompanying. Martin Eugene, second son of Zebedee and Mary Walters, passed away as noted in the notice.
Davis born March 9 1982 in Avoca Wisconsin died November 6 at his home near Elgin aged 71 He moved to Iowa in 1883 and lived near Wadena and West Union He married Eva Wilbur March 25 1913 at Wadena They had five children and he spent life farming near West Union and Elgin He joined Presbyterian church and later joined the Masonic lodge Survived by wife four children two sisters a brother four grandchildren and many relatives

Creditors must file claims with legal authentication for allowance and debtors to pay to Blanche Turner executrix. Dated November 9 1958. Mrs. Helen Lovell of the Iowa State Health Department outlines the Basic Seven daily foods. She stresses leafy greens, citrus and tomatoes, potatoes, milk, meat, whole grains, and butter or fortified margarine as essential. Milk remains the most lacking yet vital food, with free charts and pamphlets available from the Nutrition Service in Des Moines.
Sam Thompson, extension farm economist at Iowa State College, forecasts cattle numbers by January 1 may rise slightly from last year, based on cow and heifer slaughter during the current year.
United States hens set a higher egg production record in September with an average of 13 eggs per bird, surpassing the ten year average by two eggs per bird, indicating a strong pullet output across flocks nationwide.
Iowa State College research shows close spaced potatoes produce top yields. Spacings of 6, 9, 12 and 15 inches were tested and the best results came from the 6 and 9 inch intervals.
Sunday guests at the Mrs Mabel Gruver home in Elgin included Mr and Mrs Lester Martin Crystal Lake Mr and Mrs Richard Miller and children Mrs Helen Dawson Mr and Mrs Lawrence Etter Mr and Mrs Roland Gruver and children West Union and Mrs Billy Schlee Postville Mrs Milo Olson and children and Mrs Keith Kohler and children. They were dinner guests Wednesday of Mr and Mrs Grant Schultz at Postville and on the weekend Mr and Mrs Lloyd Capper Vikki and Jack of Lansing stayed in the John Grimm and Norris Capper homes. Grant Schultz Postville also spent Saturday evening with Mr and Mrs Keith Kohler.
Rex Mulford family dined with John Tillotson and Ruth. Selmer Holm, formerly with Good Year Elkader, transfers to Waterloo Good Year farm sales and service. Ray Wiethorn and Billy from Monona dined with Reuben Schupbach. Vonda Boleyn visited Denice Douglas in Prairie du Chien. Mrs. Dennler returned from Rochester with visits to Elkader and St. Marys Hospital. Multiple tastings of visits across Elkader Manchester Tipton Wilton Junction and Gutierberg linger through the week.
Mrs Ida Grether hosted a dinner with several neighbors and friends on Wednesday. Sunday meals included Mr and Mrs Leo Grether and their family.
