Beardsley Seeks Iowa’s Third Term in Political History
The state’s history shows governors rarely win a third term. West Point context aside, Gov William Beardsley would be the fourth Iowa leader to seek a third consecutive term. Previous three-term Republicans were Samuel K. Kirkwood, Albert B. Cummins, and John Hammill, with Kirkwood reelected in 1875, Cummins in 1905, and Hammill in 1928.

Changes Made In Legislature and Water Shortages
Water shortages developed in many south central areas and scattered localities, with levels dropping up to five feet and cisterns failing. The article notes discontent within the Democratic ranks over leadership, particularly calls to replace Jake More, state party chairman since 1951, amid poor state results and Loveless faction chatter. It also mentions seven parties on the Iowa ballot, including Progressive, Prohibition, Republican Vigilantes, Socialist and Socialist Labor.

State pension overhaul and World War II bonus case
A state pension overhaul plan seeks to scrap the current system, adopt the federal Social Security program for state workers, and restore the supplementary retirement system. Towns World War II bonus board appeals to the Town supreme court on whether time spent at West Point is compensable under the bonus act for a veteran still in service when applying. The board had denied the bonus, a Carroll county district judge ordered payment, and the board had previously rejected many claims involving school time. The veteran in this case claims entitlement.

Quips and Quirks in a Mixed-Bag Comedy Sketch
A punchy page of hazy jokes and odd remarks arrives with a car repair tale. A garage call escalates to a joke about fixing a garage, followed by a series of sharp one liners. A hillbilly carries a jug and shotgun, coercing a drink from a stranger, then a quip about a pony.
