Two Marion men set enduring athletic marks in state high school events. Carl Wiley’s 11 foot hammer throw led to a record that survived as hammer throwing was later banned. H Montgomery, as a Newton high school student, kicked a 55 yard drop kick in 1926 against Ames, a record still unbeaten. Burning the Last Note covers Rev. Lookingbill officiating Pleasant Grove Church notes, with W S Rupe of the Ames Tribune as guest speaker among county ministers.
