About eleven hundred degrees and certificates were conferred at the 91st annual commencement of Iowa State University on May 26 in the armory. James H. Hilton presented diplomas as graduates, families, and friends gathered for a president's reception in Memorial Union, with notable graduates including Sarah J. Weber and Douglas A. Chapman.
Cheery Valley Pioneers met at Dale and Brad Butikofer’s home with eight members present on May 9. Members shared favorite garden vegetables, discussed a June tour from John Christen’s to Elgin grade school, and learned lawn mower maintenance. Lunch was served by Mrs. Silas Butikofer.
The Pleasant Valley Farm Bureau Homemakers met Friday May 11 at Mrs Milton Millers home with 19 members and 3 guests present. The program was presented by the group to share horticulture canning and home management tips.

Mrs H H Wolf entertained a dessert bridge party Thursday afternoon. Guests included Mesdames Arthur Herrling Wadena, Mel Kohler, C C Christ, G J Mosby Chas O'Neill, Herbert Dummermuth, Lyle Light, Russell Goodell and Miss Georgia M Schori. Prizes went to Mrs Charles O'Neill high, Mrs G J Mosby second high, and Mrs Lyle Light low.
Mr. and Mrs. G. J. Mosby and Carole traveled to Madison Wisconsin Saturday afternoon for supper and an overnight visit with Mr. and Mrs. Owen Haffner and Mrs. Emma Gray. They then drove to Rome New York for a two week visit with Capt. and Mrs. John Cannon and family.
The Marion Happy Hustlers 4H Club met May 2 at Sylvia Harold and En och Hanson’s home. Twenty-one members answered roll call and shared project experiences. Karen Olson was elected to represent the club in the Queen of Conservation contest. A camera-buying committee was formed with Wayne Anderson, Kendall Mark, and Steven Kittelson. D’Ana Cline was elected club photographer. The annual tour was set for Tuesday June 19 starting at 8 at Keith Larson’s home, with a picnic lunch at Clermont Park. Half of Mark Amundson’s 4-H Conference travel was approved for payment. Demonstration on camera care by D’Ana Cline and livestock photographing by Curtis were presented.

The Illyria Farm Bureau Home Makers met in Wa dena park for an outdoor cooking lesson by Mrs Lyle Kuhens. They cooked and enjoyed dinner while Mrs Kuhens opened the meeting and read the Fayette Women's Board report.
Busy Beavers 4-H Club met May 14 with 26 members. Diane Frieden elected as officer candidate. Kaye Loftsgard named voting delegate. Ardell Nelson and Diane Lehan chosen for citizenship speech, with Karen Cummings and Ardell Nelson as alternate for better grooming. County contest and Ames convention noted. plans for a skating party formed. a program of demonstrations and talks was presented.
Pleasant Point Study Club met in May with Mrs. Myrton Strong leading roll call mentioning Household Idea. Plans were set for a July picnic in Elkader. Members shared places of interest to visit and exchanged cookies and recipes, with Mrs. Pete Kuhlmann joining.
Mrs. Carol Wilson read Our Kids Took Us while Mrs. Loura Dennler spoke on A Trip to Greenwich Village. Mrs. John Grimm and Mrs. Howard Medberry held a contest as the hostess provided lunch for attendees.
After graduation exercises Thursday evening Roger received hospitality from the Torson family. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. Eldean Drewes of Postville, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Wenger, Mrs. Alta Torson of West Union, Mr. and Mrs. Rueben Light and Mery Anna of Waterloo, Mr. and Mrs. Cleve Bennett and Bil, Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Rothlisberger and family, Mrs. Will Kerr, Donnie and Randy Torson, all of Elgin.
Recipe notes for a three loaf batch mix lukewarm potato water brown sugar sorghum lard and coffee in a bowl. Add wheat germ and flours with raisins then knead, rise twice, shape into three loaves and bake at 375 for about an hour. Submitted by Mrs Kenneth Buroden.
Mr and Mrs Martin Wenger hosted a dinner Monday in honor of their son Stan who earned a Bachelor of Science degree at Upper Iowa University Fayette during commencement Monday morning. Guests included Mr and Mrs Harry Wenger West Union and many relatives from Clermont West Union and Stacey, among others.
A Sunday gathering at the Ed Medberry home in Overland Park Kansas honored Mr and Mrs Bruce Novak and family guests Debbie Lori and Steven. Attendees included Lloyd Holtzman and Alen, Alfred Ash and family from Fayette Jean Holtzman of Postville Walter Ash Sr and Jr and families from West Union Gordon Landswerk and family Cresco Mrs Roger Amundson and Susan.
