W D Hoard was elected department commander of the Wisconsin G A R at Green Bay on May 25. H W Thompson of Keen Bay chosen senior vice commander and W P Blinn of Antigo junior vice commander. The veterans parade drew about 2000 in line, and the encampment voted to abolish the parade in the future due to age. Afternoon report on veterans home management discussed amid opposition to new management.
The Grand Council of the Dusted Commercial Travelers of America began its session in St Paul on May 25 and will continue tomorrow. John Fenimore of Columbus Ohio attends as founder and author of its ritual and ranks 48 supreme poet councilor. Born in Wilmington Indiana he moved to New Albany then DePauw College and later entered commercial travel, making Columbus Ohio his home for fifteen years.
In New Paynesville Mann May 25 the recount inspectors seek repayment of costs and wages from August Haines and others alleging no appropriation covered the work. Haines disputes state funds were approved for the expense while Chisholm questions the likelihood of money being voted for such purpose.
London May 28 The Wilde trial drew a packed court again with Jean Wilde pale and near the jury box consulting Rev Stewart Headlam. Lord Douglas of Hawick and the Marquis of Queensberry were present bound over to keep the peace at £100 each, while Wilde avoided the Marquis gaze as spectators noted the earnest talks among Headlam Hawick and Conger.
A huge Chicago Board of Trade crowd filled the wheat pit with wild, frenzied activity as July wheat opened around 80 1 2 cents and swung to 82 cents before closing near 78 4 4 cents. Traders yelled, bumped, and surged in the crowded pit while onlookers hustled and jaws dropped. A chemist’s endorsement praised Royal Baking Powder as pure and strong.
