The Iowa Liquor Commission reports state liquor consumption of about 109,837 gallons in April, amid jokes about headaches and social antics. The column blends quips on advertisements, wartime bomb news, a diplomat joke, tornado memories from Sabula Gazette, and a remark on political tavern counts.
In a Fayette county announcement J C Davis of Oelwein declares candidacy for State Representative in the Iowa Legislature, pending Republican voters June primaries. A skeptical audience member questions the effort while light editorial aside mimics small town chatter about weather and beer.
Names and events from 1919 travel back to the present. Paul Dean returns from New York to Oelwein, A M Weibel handles West Union and Elkader business, Swen Blockhus arrives from France after a year as a machine gunner with three major drives. Leota Phillips, a volunteer nurse at Camp Dodge, returns for 30 days. Chas Gehring suffers a corn stalk burning accident tearing facial skin and eyebrows.
Bud E Andersons 3 Ring Circus brings Rodeo Ranger and Buck Lucas stars to West Union for two shows at 2:00 and 8:00 p m at the Fairgrounds. The 1944 Victory Tour features 25 acts including Tonto the Hollywood horse and Baby Jumbo the elephant with elaborate tents and electric lighting.
Funny clowns fill the huge canvas tent with laughs and roars as the circus promises the most entertaining visit. Big red blue and yellow trucks arrive at daylight. Admission is 60 cents for adults 30 cents for children under 12, taxes included. Remember the date and time. Don’t miss it.
Lt Governor Robert D Blue of Eagle Grove republican candidate for Iowa governor outlined his postwar platform. He calls for a tax study committee, a secretary of commerce to aid retailers, state aid for public schools, expanded road building, a state purchasing agent for surplus war goods, modernization of state institutions, greater local control, ending sales tax payments by local entities, and using liquor store profits to reimburse local enforcement costs. Blue began his rise from humble origins.
A World War veteran and long time public servant plans to run for governor. He has held roles from county and city attorney to state representative and Republican floor leader, now serving as lieutenant governor. He started as a grocery and clothing clerk, then practiced law for 22 years and operates a farm. He is a Mason, Shrine and Legion member, active in Rotary and Moose, and attends the Methodist church.
Miss Junia Cummings daughter of Don and Mrs Cummings of Stanley united in marriage to Harold Learn son of Levi and Mrs Learn on Sunday May 21 at United Brethren church near Stanley. Rev C Belknap of West Union officiated with Darlene Nottnagel and Hubert Cummings as attendants. Laura Learn sang a solo and the couple will reside on a farm south of Brainard. Several relatives and friends attended. A separate note recounts Owen Anderson of Madrid losing his wallet contents when plowing.
