Control Horn Flies Seen Plaguing Cattle This Spring
Farm notes report small flies bothering dairy and beef cattle. Horn flies cluster on shoulders hips and heads, are blood sucking and feed through summer. They are most plentiful in damp cool spring weather.
Insecticide Options for Beef and Dairy Cattle Sprays
The article notes control of flies on cattle using DDT or methoxychlor. For beef cattle, spray with 50 percent DDT wettable powder at about 1 pound per 12 to 12 gallons, roughly 2 quarts per animal. Methoxychlor uses the same rates as DDT. For dairy cattle, use only methoxychlor as DDT is not recommended and can pass into butterfat.
