Phrase estates of the realm misused in England history
The phrase estates of the realm is often wrongly applied to the king, lords and commons in England. It properly refers to the lords, the clergy, and the commons, with the king forming the parliament alongside these three orders. In France the three orders were nobles, clergy, and third estate until 1789.
