A large labor riot at Knots Steel in South Chicago drew 1600 workers and ended with police intervention. Two dozen leaders were arrested for rioting after clashes with machinists left several injured and a striker fatally shot in the Chicago incident.
Trempenneau Wisconsin May reports the Stormer cyclone towing a lumber raft for the Tabor Company of Keokuk. While rounding the head of the upper island the vessel was struck by a storm and blown ashore, the raft breaking into pieces.
John M. Chandler a sixty year old leading attorney of Saint Louis was instantly killed today after plunging down the elevator shaft of the Security building. The fatal accident occurred as the city reported multiple other brief items from London and Che Foo.
Theodore Roosevelt has taken the oath as one of three police commissioners in New York. At thirty five he is noted as a writer and politician and son of an old New York family. He has three New York Legislature terms and was the 1880 Republican candidate for mayor.
Report from Sergeant, Kentucky, says Gilley boys and Joe Day were killed in a near home battle on Indian Creek nine miles from Norton. Will Day is jailed in Wise County. The feud stems from the 1803 elopement between a Gilley and a Day girl, with the latest violence marking a new flare in a long-running rivalry.
Sioux Falls S D May 9 American Horse a prominent Sioux chief was held to the US grand jury in the sum of 2000 on a bigamy charge. He is accused of having four wives. Dearly and Ghost Dog two other Sioux were each held on bonds of 300 for cattle theft. All three Indians furnished bonds and returned to the reservation.
The missing Duluth coal man George Dinwoodie was identified by his name on a hat found floating about thirty feet from Dock No 1 at Northwestern Fuel company, foot of Fifth Avenue West. The body was recovered by the Mayflower’s captain during the Duluth to Superior run.
GAOR IW IOWA. The opening day of the state encampment of the Grand Army of Iowa at Clinton is pleasant with thousands of blue clad veterans, Sons of Veterans and Women's Relief Corps. Commander in Chief Thomas G. Lawler, Gov. Frank D. Jackson and Department Commander Newman are among notable visitors. A grand parade with several thousand participants began at 2 p m. Camp fires and speeches followed in Davis' Opera House and three churches.

Prof J E B Todd, state geologist, leads geology, with Prof F Smith guiding economic and mining departments.
