Win Three Firsts in State Music Contest

Digin High School returned from the state music contest in Monona with three firsts and one set of ratings. The band mixed chorus and girls chorus earned high marks, while the boys chorus received a first in one division. Monona High School led with more than 200 students earning several ratings, posting four Vs. Postville placed third with two I’s, two I’s, and five schools overall. Maynard Arlington Nora Springs Jesup Strawbe Point each earned an I rating in one group. Eleven schools did not receive any first ratings. Elgin and the Shas D School competed with the larger high schools. The district praises our young people and congratulates them, especially Mr. Grether, for spring 1955 achievements.

Crider Twins Chosen For Boys State

Keith and Kenneth Crider, twin sons of Dr and Mrs R A Crider, will represent Elgin at Boys State. Juniors sponsored by Elgin Post American Legion and Elgin Lions Club, selections reflect scholarship and leadership. Camp Dodge Des Moines hosts June 5 to 12 with about 720 attendees learning government functions.

Sectional Tourney Action Sees West Union Triumph

West Union defeated Elgin Clermont 3 to 2 in the second round of the sectional tourney and Wadena beat May 10 to 3. In the final, West Union beat Wadena 3 to 0. Weston homered twice, one with the bases loaded. Berns also connected for West Union. Cran dall and DeCook pitched for Wadena. Klinger and Weston for West Union with Berns catching.

Ill and Hospitalized Breaks Leg in Hog Chase

Malcolm Gilchrist of Strawberry Point broke his leg in two places while chasing a hog Monday and was taken to Oelwein hospital. Tom Torkelson went to Decorah hospital for X rays Thursday and underwent major surgery Saturday. Bobby Medberry, a patient at St Marys Rochester, has been moved to Room 1233 and remains serious. John Upland of Columbia Falls had appendix surgery April 22 and is recovering. W C Falk returned from Rochester to bring Edna Hausberger home, who is recovering well. David Christen, son of Mr and Mrs Will Christen, received a steel fragment in his eye and was sent to Waterloo for removal. Butternut squash described as buff colored, bottle shaped, about 10 inches long and 4 to 5 inches wide, stores well fresh or frozen.

Legislative Committee Members Start Work

Iowa legislators named to key committees for two years have begun work on special projects. Henry Stevens becomes budget and financial control committee chair with Kendall Lynes as vice chair and George O Malley as secretary. Other members include Washburn Byers Burton Frommell Patrick Hendrix Loss Op Conn Henry Henry Knudson Molison Pedahl Blythe Johannes. The tax study group includes Prentis Knudson Molison Bhgood Pedahl and others with a report due to the governor and legislature on revisions. If needed a special session may be called to address the tax problem.

Pierson lauds GOP led session and party scorecard

State Chairman Don Pierson says the GOP dominated legislature performed well in the recently ended session. He notes about 77 percent of party platform recommendations received positive action. Governor Leo Hoegh praises the legislature for tackling necessary items and advancing a real highway program with plans to widen highways by August.

Homecoming Plans Discussed at Community Club Meeting

The Community Club at the Legion hall discussed homecoming plans with Gen. Lyle Light reporting progress. The parade committee has years of experience and accepts floats from civic and farm groups while fly spraying proposals faced council division and failed passage. The club will hold monthly meetings until homecoming and plans a September monthlong vacation.

Corn Planting Delayed by Weekend Showers

In this vicinity little corn was planted last week as weekend showers slowed work. At least 75 percent remained unplanted early this week. Farmers prefer delays until warmer weather to improve germination while fields are plowed and ready for planting.

Tractor Flips on Gehrig Farm Injures Farmer

Operator Fred Schwendemen, who farms the Gehrig farm between Elgin and Wadena, escaped serious harm after a tractor accident on April 23. While stretching a woven wire fence on an incline, the front end lifted, the machine toppled, and his leg was momentarily caught. He freed himself, sustaining only bruises, as the tractor suffered heavy damage.

Cancer drive total $75.50 in Pleasant Valley district

Mrs Mervin Hunsberger reported the cancer drive chairman that the Pleasant Valley township collection totaled 75 dollars and 50 cents. Ten workers conducted a four house to house canvass in the district.
