Tuition hike and loan plan eyed for Iowa schools

Rep Maurice Van Nostrand proposes raising tuition at Iowa three state schools so residents pay 30 percent and non residents 63 percent of instructional costs. If enacted, Iowa resident tuition could rise by 172 dollars next year from 274. A plan to channel extra revenue into large scale student loans is tied to the move, with up to 12 million dollars raiseable over two years. Federal support would cover interest on loans and banks would match guarantees through the United Student Aid Fund. The legislature debates taxes and education funding as Gov Hughes calls for a broad tax reform plan.
