About 12 538 552 receive checks though each recipient represents a four member family totaling over 50 million people dependent on the federal treasury. Golf Course In Fine Shape For Spring Play
The West Union Country club thrives as heavy seeding pays off with a thick turf and well moistened subsoil, keeping the course in unusually good condition for the season. Dr. L. L. Carr of Clermont tested the layout earlier this week and praised the fairways nearing mid season form. Meanwhile the Melvin Hand family of Emmetsburg faced a rough day with Pat breaking his wrist pole vaulting and Betty injuring a shoulder in softball, compounded by a car accident involving the Hand vehicle as the doctor arrived.

Dr C H Hunt died Sunday afternoon at the hotel while visiting old friends and neighbors. Mrs Roxens Smith died Sunday afternoon at her West Union home, mother of F M Smith of our town. Dora Matthews of Farmersburg visits at the Wm Brown home. Arlie Billings of Cedar Rapids stayed with Alma Grover last Wednesday. F R Berg went to Fairbank Tuesday to attend Epworth League convention. Elgin lost to Farmersburg 17 to 7 Sunday afternoon. Cedar Rapids Gazette ran a photo and write up of O M Benson, now teller at the Commercial Savings Bank. Anna Reusser came from West Union to spend Sunday near the city. Misses Anna Benson Susie Caper Alma Gruver and David Forbes went to Fairbank Monday as Epworth League delegates. Ole Nelson of Gander left Saturday for St Paul then New York where a ship will take him to Norway. Some locals are eating lettuce from their own gardens. Mrs A D Kinney and son Arthur began an extended visit with relatives at different points. F G Spahr and Rudolph Yunker left Friday for Switzerland.

Postville Girl Takes Second in State Declamatory Contest
Eulalia Klingbeil of Postville, daughter of Editor Win Klingbeil, won second in the state declamatory contest at Jefferson. A 17 year old high school student, she performed The Undercurrent and is active in band and orchestra, playing French horn and serving as drum major. She is a Thespian member with high scholastic standing and was invited to read her winning selections at West Union High School.
