Ernest Klett and Charles Alessio, both of Oelwein, pleaded guilty to larceny of a motor vehicle before Judge H. E. Taylor. They stole Dr. Ward’s car, found abandoned near Waverly days later. They were arrested in Waterloo and sentenced to an indeterminate term up to 10 years in Anamosa’s men’s reformatory, already begun serving.
Frederick Neuanschwander, longtime Remsen resident, died Friday at Sacred Heart hospital after a short illness from kidney trouble and heart disease. Born October 29, 1875 in Elgin, he moved to Remsen as a child and lived on a north Remsen farm until his death. He married la Gardt and they had six children. Funeral services were held Monday at St Pauls Evangelical Church in Remsen with interment in Remsen cemetery. He was uncle to Nick Schori and John Neuenschwander and well remembered by Elgin’s older residents.
A local columnist laments the impulse to hide bad news from the newspaper. Editors rarely enjoy printing disagreeable stories but publish when necessary, questioning why offenders fail to consider their families until caught.

Louis Klingman announced a special meeting of Little 8 League managers at West Union at 8 PM to discuss a protest against a league team. Details were unclear and could not be reported before the Echo’s next edition.
The Elgin Chapter 0. E. will hold its regular monthly meeting next Wednesday evening May 11 with initiatory work followed by refreshments and social time. Abe Habeger was surprised on his birthday last Wednesday as twenty friends joined him at home. Six thirty dinner guests in the F Muehlethaler home included Belva Benson Marie Mosby Geraldine Schori Wilma Steinmers and Gitma Olson.
A cast of four hundred will perform in the Diamond Jubilee Pageant of Upper Iowa University to be staged June 6 and 7 on the Upper Iowa campus. Elizabeth Troy of Fayette will portray her grandmother Mrs. Elizabeth Alexander, mother of Upper Iowa, who helped found the institution. The opening scenes feature the trunk that carried the Alexanders money to Fayette in a prairie schooner. Episode one includes twenty-one Indians and fifteen squaws.
Lola Dummermuth daughter of Mr and Mrs Albert Dummermuth of south of Elgin wed Donald Jensen son of Mr and Mrs Christ Jensen of West Union in Galena Tl on September 22 1981. The ceremony was by a Methodist minister with Albert Moschel and Eda Zurbriggen present. The bride a 1981 Elgin High School graduate taught near her home. the groom a 1928 West Union High School graduate works on his father's farm and conducts an orchestra. The couple have many friends who wish them well.
Editor notes Henry Field seeks Senate seat and urges using newspapers for advertising. He attacks radio dependence and government pamphlets as waste, citing Washington bureaus and costly campaigns. He suggests trimming excess taxpayer funded pamphlets, while promoting field’s stance and messaging.
Sixty attendees gathered Monday evening May 2 at W. Rothlisberger home for a standards for Cooked Foods lesson led by Mrs. Rothlisberger. Eighteen women took part including four new members. judging whole wheat bread noted. A picnic supper followed. The next training school will be a poster meeting at Mrs. Rothlisberger home on Thursday May 6.
An item from Fayette Leader reports the marriage of Arthur Carpenter of this place to Miss Sadie Gleason. The ceremony occurred at the bride's home in Blairsburg on Wednesday, April 18. Carpenter has many friends who extend congratulations and best wishes.
Elgin Alumni Association will hold its annual business meeting at the town hall on Friday evening May 6 with President Howard Shaffer urging a large turnout. The Yas club met again this week and revived interest in the old fashioned pastime, with new converts expected. Mr and Mrs Steve Houser and family of Decorah visited John Falk’s home Sunday. Wm E Baumgartner was ill briefly last week but has returned to work.
Jim Fox of Forest City won the contract to grade nine miles of county trunks between Elgin and West Union. The project, let last Thursday at West Union, is near $9,000 and will use about 90 percent local county labor. Work starts after Fox moves equipment, about the latter part of the week, and should take about three months to complete. The previous road project paid 24 cents per cubic yard for excavation two years ago near Westgate, with Fox receiving 12 cents and a competitor 11.9 cents.
A group asks if a Republican caucus will be held before the primaries in Pleasant Valley township. They note low turnout at the last caucus and propose calling one in the third week of May if enough interest is shown. Citizens may contact Mrs. Till Hanson or R. P. Strauch to express preference.
Federal agents nabbed two rum runners after monitoring crossings of the Marquette bridge. Mike Bradley carried 150 gallons and Earl Hafenbecker 15 gallons of alleged alcohol. A third car fled to a side road at the Wickersheim place Giard. its driver escaped with help to a McGregor hideout. The car and liquor were confiscated.
Elgin moves toward the 1932 season with eighteen players on the Little 8 roster after cuts. Manager L F Klingman released a list Monday, noting possible later changes. The names include L L Kiple Frank Kiple Clit Kiple Eddie Klingman Louis Klingman Chas Gruger Walter Falk Richard Gehring Otto Olson Geo Pollitt Clive Helms Joe Becker Lewis Thoma George Anderson Bob Steele H H Wolf F Henninger and Arthur Herrling. Louis Klingman is manager Geo Pollitt assistant and Walter Kohler secretary treasurer.
Mr and Mrs Harry Wenger and Mr and Mrs F D Welch attended the nurses training school graduation at Westminster Presbyterian church in Waterloo last Friday evening. Melvina Hoover, a Wenger cousin and Elgin high school class of 1929 graduate, was in the class and had lived with the Wengers during study. The Baptist Ladies Missionary Society met yesterday afternoon at church parlors with Mrs M Zurbriggen and Louise Schori hosting.
A community meeting at the Elgin opera house drew about 160 men despite rain and road conditions. Speakers including Fred Bierman and J D Clinton stressed neighborly goodwill and mined value at home, while confirming the Elgin Canning Company will operate this season with about 400 acres and Country Gentleman corn. Prices to growers will be about half of 1931 but provide a cash market and local employment. Beans and carrots move slowly. five corn payloads shipped recently.
The Myria farm bureau meeting for May will be held Thursday evening the 12th at the community church. The program includes readings by Lucille Hanson and John Graham, solos by Earl Rothlisberger, a violin duet by Otis and Helen Rothlisberger, talks by Guy Ernst and Thelma Thompson, and a Ladies’ Quartette.

The Fayette county committee approved 20 seed, feed and fuel loans with a top request of 400 dollars and a low of 40 dollars. The average loan is 146.65 dollars. Most loans have been disbursed, some reduced slightly, with a government representative planning visits. Loans carry 12 percent interest and are due November 30.
