Market Day and Social Ties in Elgin and Surroundings
Elgin residents mark market day with visits and meals. Numerous families from Lena, Des Moines, Waterloo, Cedar Rapids, Ames and West Union attended weekend gatherings, dinners, and basketball tournaments. Notes mention travel to Des Moines for games, stays with relatives, and a 42nd wedding anniversary observed by the Dummeruths. A reflective aside contrasts poverty and wealth, praising community exchange and local talents on radio and TV programs.
