Prince Henry of Prussia completed his tour, arriving in New York after nine days away, then traveled to Philadelphia. Miss Alice Roosevelt daughter of the president travels with several friends and a maid to Havana to visit Gen and Mrs Leonard Wood. The party includes Mrs Harriet Blaine Beal and 2d Capt Philp. They will travel by rail to Florida and expect to return to Washington in the better part of the month.
Prince Henry arrived in Philadelphia at 10 20 am greeted by Mayor Ashbridge and citizens. He received the freedom of the city at City Hall, toured Independence Hall and Cramp's shipyard, and inspected the Russia battleship Retaken. Later in New York he sailed on the Deutschland via Hoboken, dining with hosts and toasting the Kaiser and President Roosevelt.
Washington reports the third Roosevelt cabinet change as Secretary Long resigns effective May 1. Representative William Henry Moody of Massachusetts succeeds Long as Navy Secretary. Moody receives congratulations on the floor as Democratic and Republican members alike acknowledge the appointment.
Boston March 12. After six weeks of skirmishing the labor war between organized Boston stewards, freight and express handlers and the railroads New York New Haven Hartford and New York Central Hudson River known as Boston Albany broke out yesterday. About 8 000 men in and about Boston are involved. Strikes expand as non union freight is refused and efforts mount to extend influence while firms attempt to replace workers and dispatch goods. Actions by Adams and New York & Boston will halt work. Italian labor steps in for NYNH&H. The Boston Albany plans new workers as the fast freight network faces disruption across nearby centers. The dispute draws attention of labor traders.
A man arrested in Kansas City on suspicion of being Bennett the San Francisco murder suspect Nora Fuller is not the killer. Capt. Seymour arrived with a message from Chief Hayes, confirmed the misidentification, and the suspect was discharged.
London reports confirm General Methuen was captured wounded with four guns and thirty two killed or wounded as Boer forces under De la Rey attack near Twe-Bosch and Palmietekill. Lord Kitchener telegrams detail Paris surrender and the retreat of the rear guard amid panicked wagon columns.
New York motorman George White of the Walon Railway saved a boy at risk to his own life in New Rochelle on Beachwood avenue. He pulled the child away from a furniture van as his trolley car ran with power on. White was suspended after the incident.
The U S Supreme Court ruled the federal antitrust statute unconstitutional due to its exemption for agricultural products and Nye sock from enforcement. The decision, in the case of Thomas Connelly and others versus the Union Sewer Pipe Company of Ohio, was delivered by Justice Harlan in Washington on March 12.
The Cunard steamer Etruria, crippled by a broken propeller and lost rudder, was towed to the Azores harbor at Horta. After a two day delay, a jury rudder was fitted and the ship remained upright with passengers delaying business but enjoying deck sports and concerts. the Elbe will later transport passengers home.
El Paso reports the Cannon Ball express wreck on the Southern Pacific may have killed at least fifty. Many victims burned or unidentifiable, with seventy five injured aboard the relief train. Four thousand crowd the station as wounded are treated, clothing scarce, and fear remains over cause as passengers blame the engineer.
Lieut. Powell Clayton junior, U S A, recently reassigned from the Mexican embassy to Wort Myer cavalry. During Christmas he argued with a Mexican officer over American politics in the Orient. The Mexican officer challenged him to a duel. Clayton refused the duel stating his commission forbade such. He was expelled from clubs in Mexico City and warned by a high official that his social position there was compromised.
The Senate debated the ship subsidy bill with Mr. Frye defending it as a Republican party priority. The House pressed a rural free delivery classification bill, but no vote was reached as supporters faced a large speaker list and uncertainty on passage. The week saw pauses, adjournments, and arrangements for a March 17 vote on amendments.
In Bloomington on March 12 two young men named Burke and Pearson from respectable families were shot by police under suspicion of incendiary acts. An arson spree with large rewards had been ongoing. a diary fire last night prompted police to halt and fire on the two men who stood under suspicion.
