Entries mock car culture with playful definitions such as Anti Freez E a nosy radiator fluid, Detour the longest distance between two points, Emergency Brake a hand found after danger passes, and Glove Compartment a stash for travel mementos.
A color ed physician joked about curing a dying husband then noted no hope for recovery. Mrs Bariah Baer, 75, a Council Bluffs pioneer, was found dead by her landlady in a locked chair. Fire believed caused by ashes or a lit match ignited her pipe. Her daughter handled the scene.
Four missionaries at Webb Memorial Girls School host visitors touring dorms kitchens and classrooms. The account covers staff from New York Texas Wisconsin and Illinois with details on pupil numbers feeding costs and daily life. Visits include the Baroda M E church Maharajah palace zoo elephant barns and the city palace with gilded carriages and jewels before departing for Bombay.
Senator Guy M. Gillette is considering recommending Fred Biermann of Devorah, former representative in Congress for Iowa's Fourth District, as United States marshal for northern Iowa and a definite decision is understood though no announcement has yet been made.
Joel Miller takes possession of Hotel Dewey today as E A West retires after a year managing the hotel. The village reports several moves and social events, including the Elgin Concert Band at the schoolhouse and Dora Matthews renting rooms to open a dressmaking parlor.
Music should be available to all and lessoned by the Progressive Home Study club meeting in Illyria township. Tessan in project III covered growing up with music, with Wm. Diamond discussing rural electrification. A marriage license was issued in Decorah to Kenneth Hellum and Viola Peck. George A. Baker remains Decorah mayor as voters keep him in office.
Indianapolis scene shows Ray Sears, director of the seventh annual Butler Indoor Relays on March 18, with Miss Sara Renfrew. Sears explains the carnival's history while they hold a main trophy. Entries include Michigan, Ohio State, Indiana, Michigan State, Purdue, Notre Dame, Illinois, Wisconsin, Marquette and other schools.
Supervisor W E Anderson says improvements to the hill road between Arlington and Wadena are promising for the next road building season. A State Highway Commission representative visited Fayette county to discuss farm market roads under new state funds. The line is needed as Wadena lacks rail service, shortening the distance to the railroad by two miles with an upgraded highway.
In Des Moines on Friday Secretary Harry L. Hopkins unveiled a federal program aimed at uniting business leaders farmers labor and government. The maiden speech as a Roosevelt cabinet member spoke of a new spirit of cooperation to restore national prosperity. Photo shows Governor George A. Wilson greeting Hopkins as they met and shook hands.
Nine year old Leonard Lingeman Jr. of St Louis dies after a spark from a coal stove ignites the celluloid keyboard of his accordion. In McGregor Charles Knoebel dies after a hit and run on highway 13 near his home. Donald Finnegan bound over to grand jury on manslaughter charge after inquest finds Knoebel’s death caused by vehicle operated by Finnegan.
West Bend man Walter Zaugg and Fort Scott Kansas Miss Mabel Marie Banwart were married on February 16. They have not yet arrived here to begin their life together. The groom is the son of Mr and Mrs Wm Zaugg and the bride is the daughter of Mr and Mrs J S Banwart.
